It took a village to save one very small, very determined kitten. Late one night this week, a tiny terrified but tenacious tabby with a badly broken leg was spotted slipping through the bushes at Walgreens—part ghost, part lightning—before vanishing behind the water machine.

And that’s when the story turned into something extraordinary: a Good Samaritan refused to let him disappear into the night, and the National Guard happened to be nearby and joined in, sweeping the area with a bright, steady spotlight. The kitten kept slipping away toward the danger, but the National Guard members kept him from escaping and his rescuer reached in and gently, carefully brought him out of the dark and into safety—earning herself a bruised arm but giving him a future he otherwise wouldn’t have had.

At the shelter, the truth of his injury was clear. His broken leg was severely infected and had lost blood flow. There was only one path forward: amputation.

Today, this brave little survivor—now named Wally from Walgreens—is safe and healing, beginning again on three perfect legs instead of four, and the very person who refused to give up on him that night will now foster him through recovery as his medical foster.

From the National Guard, to a stranger who became his lifeline, to our shelter and clinic teams who show up without hesitation—this is what it looks like when compassion gathers itself up and refuses to let a small life slip away. Sometimes the smallest creatures bring out the biggest kind of love 💕

Yesterday, the adoption fairy was working overtime at the Santa Fe Children’s Museum!

Hannah packed her bags first, heading home with an adopter who arrived with a plan and left with a puppy. Mozzarella inspired a road trip from Taos after her future family met her at the shelter and decided life simply required more cheese. And Caramel quietly fulfilled a very specific destiny: becoming the third cat in a household that had been saving a spot for exactly the right feline.

We’re back at PetSmart today from 12–3 PM with more kittens, puppies, and one particularly wonderful adult dog ready to swap a kennel for a home!

Early voting was a landslide success yesterday — and the winners were pets! 🗳️🐾

By the time the polls closed, three candidates had secured forever homes: two puppies and one kitten.

Blu the Siamese kitten will be joining Bunny, a resident Himalayan cat. Moy won over a voter who came only to support Blu’s adopter through the adoption process but ended up casting her heart’s ballot for him instead. And Hawk-eye sealed the deal with a family looking for a new cattle dog mix to join their pup, Dodger.

A huge thank you to Margaret for helping make the event happen. She even posed with one of our kitten candidates, who is still on the ballot and available for adoption!

Missed the polls? Your next chance to vote is today Saturday May 30 at the Children’s Museum in Santa Fe from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. We’ll have adoptable puppies and one very special gold-and-white kitten ready to earn your vote.

Pacifico Pet of the Month: Betty

Betty is an 8-year-old queen with a heart of gold, a zest for life, and enough personality to keep you smiling every single day!

Betty may be a senior girl, but don’t tell HER that. This active lady still loves her walks, car rides, adventures, and quality couch time with her favorite humans of all ages. She’s loyal, loving, house-trained, and once she trusts you, she’ll be your ride-or-die best friend for life. Bonus: Betty also does pretty well with other dogs!

Betty is part of our incredible Fosters in the Pen program through the Penitentiary of New Mexico, where she’s been receiving training, enrichment, and lots of love while helping create second chances on BOTH sides of the leash.

🌟 Come meet Betty TODAY, Friday, at Paws at the Polls!
📍 Nancy Rodriguez Community Center in Santa Fe.

Sunshine, Memorial Day crowds, and the best beginning imaginable: Peeta and Teal went home together on Sunday. ☀️🐾

These two spent time in foster care building confidence, learning social skills, and getting comfortable around people and other animals—which made them the perfect match for a family with a dog at home ready for feline sidekicks.

🚨 Pet health alert 🚨

We are seeing both Parvo in dogs and panleukopenia in cats circulating in our community right now. These deadly viruses spread fast and hit hardest in unvaccinated pets—but previously vaccinated adult animals need boosters too. On top of that, rabies cases are increasing in other parts of New Mexico.

Now is the time to protect your pets.

Drive through our FREE Pet Amigos Vaccine Clinic every Thursday and Friday from 10 AM–2 PM at our beautiful new clinic space. No appointment needed.

📍Española Humane Animal Clinic is located at 2126 El Llano Road, across from the Ohkay Owingeh Municipal Airport, north of the high school.(Our shelter remains in the same location!)

Quick, convenient, and caring—just drive up and we’ll take it from there. 🐾

Now playing exclusively at our Ojo Santa Fe Puppy Patch: two tiny country music legends with outlaw charm, arena-sized personalities, and enough heart to headline their own world tour. Dolly Parton and Waylon Jennings have already lived through the kind of story that earns a standing ovation. After surviving Parvo with the help of their miracle working foster heroes, Mike and Julie Martinez, Dolly and Waylon came out the other side bigger, brighter, and ready to take on the world.

They grew up surrounded by other dogs, are now entertaining large groups of guests at the resort, adore people, and are ready for forever homes.

Catch these legends by appointment only at the Ojo Santa Fe Puppy Patch before they sell out their final tour dates: apply on our website!

These two are the Pets of the Month for The Alley Santa Fe and Santa Fe Tails! Thank you for supporting our pets and programs, and for helping us the littles of lives 🙏
