Is crate training really necessary? 🤔

Crate training offers lots of benefits for your dog, and crates can be a fantastic tool in your training toolbox — if used correctly.

Crates should always be large enough that your dog can stretch out and lie down comfortably, but not too large that your dog has extra room to roam around in.

Crates should also be a welcoming, comforting den for your dog to relax in, not a method for punishment. Keep your dog’s kennel near the rest of the family in the house and use treats and chew toys to reward your dog for using the kennel.

At Wonder Dog Training, we believe in dog-friendly, science-backed, positive reinforcement training methods.

But what does positive reinforcement training mean? 🤔

The concept is based on the principles of operant conditioning, in which behavior is determined by its consequence. With positive reinforcement, we encourage desirable behavior with rewards and redirect or ignore unwanted behaviors.

Over time, the behaviors that have been reinforced win out, and the unrewarded behaviors are extinguished.

When used correctly, positive reinforcement training is extremely effective and results in a happy, confident dog! Plus, this method is fun for the dog and dog parents as well!
