A scrawny dockyard stray got smuggled onto a British warship, took shrapnel from enemy shelling, and went right back to work - and he is still the only cat in history to win a medal for wartime bravery.
His name was Simon, and in 1949 his ship spent almost ten weeks trapped on a Chinese river, caught in a tense standoff that had opened with heavy shelling.
Wounded and singed himself, he limped through the ship hunting the rats that threatened the trapped crew's food, and curled up with injured sailors to keep their spirits up.
The Navy gave him the rank of Able Seacat and the Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross. No cat before or since has ever earned one.
