Many people have probably heard about the Canine Upper Respiratory Infection that is circulating. It presents as kennel cough and can turn into pneumonia quickly. Colorado seems to be a hot spot. Symptoms include:
Coughing
Sneezing
Unusual respiratory rate
Decreased appetite
Lethargy
Contracted by dog to dog interaction. As with many respiratory infections young, old and immune compromised individuals can be more susceptible .It is unknown at this time how long droplets hang in the air or on surfaces. Please limit your puppy/dog's exposure to other dogs. Dog parks, day-care facilities, boarding facilities where dogs co-mingle can raise the chances of your dog contracting this infection.
The holidays are upon us and many people will be boarding their dogs while they travel. Ask your boarding facility what their disinfecting protocols are and what policies they have should your pup get sick while you are away.
At Two Bears we disinfect our training room between clients. We are advising them to avoid all dog parks, daycares and board only if absolutely necessary. Young puppies should be carried or crated at the vet.
