I was asked a while back about what our mission is here at Hooves N Harmony. Ironically, I ask myself this same question every couple of years and I’ve come up with an interesting discovery. Our mission has changed and adapted through our years, but what hasn’t changed are our core values.
As a horsewoman I’m always learning, through peers, horses, and yes, even your kiddos! Peers encourage me to try new methods, horses teach me to stop and listen, to each of them, as individuals, and, your kids, well, they teach me language and patience!
What I’ve learned is I love teaching complete horsemanship. I’ve gone back and forth between choosing a discipline. Judging myself, questioning myself. Looking at other programs, curious if I should slow down and take away the reins until each student has the perfect seat. Questions and scenarios play in my head. “Why is sally not trusting herself? How can I help her? Jenny isn’t using that leg enough and I see she can do this how can I communicate to her more effectively? Johnny isn’t motivated at all to put in work. I don’t want him to quit loving this, but how do I get him
Motivated? Is it fair to do lessons without riding? so many of my kiddos could benefit, but will their parents understand that? After all they are paying for riding lessons.” Then there are the circles and scenarios playing about the horses. “Should I keep wrapping Brandi or are we ready for air on her leg? Am I going the right way about getting her rehabilitated? How can I “dumb”
Chardonnay down a bit and get her more confident? Does sarge need breathing treatments more often?”
This business is so much more than a job to me. It’s my life’s passion. I believe in giving our youth an outlet in the barn. Whether they just need time on their horse, or they want to learn how to ask their horse for the correct lead so they aren’t counter cantering around the barrels or relying on their horse to do a lead change for them. I believe in supporting your child who just needs the peace and serenity of Riding the trail each week, or your child who wants to learn how to ride through their body and truly connect with their horse. I believe in giving your child the ability to ride horses of different training levels and personalities so they can adapt and overcome. A skill that isn’t only helpful on horseback, but in life as well.
So today, if you ask me what my business mission is. I would tell you. “We want to touch as many people as we can, and share real, horsemanship skills regardless of a desired discipline. We want to provide a safe, professional environment for both students and horses alike”
