Spring allergy season is here, and our furry friends can feel it too! 🌼🐾

If your pet is constantly scratching, licking their paws, shaking their head, or has red/irritated skin, they may be dealing with seasonal allergies. Just like people, pets can react to pollen, grass, dust, and other environmental allergens.

Don’t let itching make your pet uncomfortable—check out this simple to-do list to help make sure your pet isn’t itchy or having allergy issues!

It is National Heartworm Awareness Month! 🤍

Heartworm disease is something we hope no pet ever has to face—but unfortunately, one of our most favorite patients, Finn, was recently diagnosed and is now undergoing treatment.

Heartworm treatment is not only tough on pets, but it can also be lengthy and costly for families. The process involves multiple visits, strict activity restriction, and medications to safely eliminate the worms. It’s not something anyone wants to go through if it can be prevented.

The good news? Heartworm disease is almost entirely preventable.

Monthly heartworm prevention is simple, affordable, and protects your pet from this serious condition. Pair that with annual blood testing, and we can catch any issues early—before they become life-threatening.

This is your reminder: prevention is always easier (and safer) than treatment.

If your pet isn’t currently on a heartworm preventative or is due for testing, give us a call—we’re here to help keep them healthy ❤️

Finn is doing fantastic and in process of his heartworm treatment at AHC. We adore him! Leave Finn a “❤️” to wish him good luck on his treatment!

🥵 With the summer heat, remember to check your pet's water bowl more often!

Our fur babies can't sweat like humans. They cool down through panting and paw pad sweat, so staying hydrated in critical for regulating body temp.

💔 Today we say goodbye to our incredible Head Nurse, Liz — vet tech wizard, patient whisperer, and reigning queen of movie quotes and spontaneous show tunes.

She’s off to South Carolina with her family, and while we’re so excited for her new adventure, our hearts are a bit shattered. Her talent, humor, compassion, and Broadway vocals will be deeply missed (seriously, who else is going to sing Defying Gravity while placing catheters?).

Liz, thank you for your knowledge, your laughter, your fierce dedication, and for making even the craziest days brighter. South Carolina is lucky to have you — but don’t get too comfortable. We expect frequent visits. And maybe a group d and d Zoom sesh!

We love you. We miss you already. Now go be amazing… as if you know how to be anything else. 💙🐾

🩺 Surgery Day Smiles at AHC! 🐶✂️

It’s a big day for Tommy, who’s in for his neuter—and he’s in the best hands! Our talented tech duo, Tyler and Julio, are making sure he’s prepped with lots of love (and some top-tier cuddles 💕).

Joining us in the OR today is the always-wonderful Divya, a 4th-year vet student from the University of Minnesota, who’s back on her home turf with us at AHC for her externship! 👩‍⚕️🎓

We love surgery days because they give us the chance to practice top-quality care, teamwork, and a little bit of silliness behind the scenes (because laughter is healing too, right?).

Here’s to safe surgeries, speedy recoveries, and a team that always brings their A-game—and a few jokes along the way. 🐾💉

🚨 Toxic Alert: Rat Poison Ingestion 🚨
Meet Nero, a 6-month-old standard schnauzer and this morning’s surprise emergency. This handsome boy found himself in a heap of trouble after getting into rat poison. Luckily, his humans acted fast — and so did we. ❤️‍🩹🐾

💡 Here’s what every pet owner needs to know:

🐀 What is rodenticide poisoning?

Rat poison contains anticoagulants that prevent blood from clotting, leading to internal bleeding that can be fatal if not treated promptly. Some types can also affect the nervous system or kidneys.

📞 What to do if your pet ingests rat poison:
1. Call your vet immediately or head to the nearest emergency clinic.
2. Contact Animal Poison Control for expert guidance:
• ASPCA Poison Control: (888) 426-4435
• Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661
(A consultation fee may apply, but it’s worth every penny.)
3. Bring the packaging or product name with you — this helps determine the type of poison and the correct treatment.

🧪 What treatment may include:
• Induced vomiting (if ingestion was recent and safe to do so)
• Activated charcoal to limit absorption
• Bloodwork to check clotting times
• Vitamin K therapy, often for 30+ days
• Plasma transfusion or hospitalization if signs of internal bleeding occur

💸 What to expect in terms of cost:

Emergency treatment can vary based on:
✔️ How much was ingested
✔️ Time since exposure
✔️ Whether hospitalization or transfusions are needed
Expect $300–$2,000+, depending on severity and treatment required.

Nero was lucky — his family acted quickly and gave us the info we needed to jump into action. He’s now resting comfortably (and probably planning his next “adventure” 🙄).

⚠️ Pet-proof your home and garage, and avoid using rodenticides wherever pets may roam. Accidents happen fast, but awareness saves lives.

💬 Share this post to help keep pets safe — and send Nero some love in the comments! 🖤🐶
