Weekly Nesting Update: June 12, 2025
🐢 Happy Loggerhead Day! 🐢
It's Sea Turtle Week, and today we're celebrating the star of our shores — the loggerhead sea turtle! Our FWC-permitted volunteers have documented 2,316 loggerhead nests so far this season, up from 1,704 just last week. We've also recorded 32 green turtle nests (up from 11!), 1 leatherback, and 1 Kemp's ridley — all four species on our 20 miles of Gulf Coast beach.
Loggerhead nesting peaks in June — so the busiest nights are still ahead. Green turtles begin nesting later in the season than loggerheads, so those numbers will continue to climb as summer progresses. 🌊
Our beach is meant to be shared. People by day. Turtles by dark. When the sun goes down, nesting females and their hatchlings deserve a quiet, dark, obstacle-free beach — and we can give them that with just a little effort:
🕳️ Fill your holes before you leave — open pits trap nesting females and emerging hatchlings.
🗑️ Pack out your trash — food scraps attract predators that target nests.
🌑 Go dark — turn off, shield, or redirect any lights visible from the beach at night.
🏖️ Clear your gear — chairs, canopies, and equipment left overnight can become obstacles to nesting turtles and hatchlings.
🎣 Mind your fishing line — dispose of used line properly and never leave it behind; discarded or tangled line is a serious entanglement hazard for sea turtles and other wildlife
Enjoy every minute of your beach day — then leave it ready for turtles at night.. 🐢
