NEWPORT, R.I. – A driver was charged by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) after toll cameras on the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge mistakenly identified a pet bearded dragon instead of the vehicle’s electronic toll transponder.

The reptile was visible inside the vehicle as the driver crossed the bridge. The automated toll cameras detected the animal rather than the driver’s registered transponder.

After reviewing the footage, RITBA determined the charge had been issued in error and refunded the vehicle owner.

The Newport Bridge, which connects Newport, Rhode Island and Jamestown, uses electronic toll collection to process payments for vehicles traveling across the span. Drivers typically use an E-ZPass transponder mounted inside their vehicle so the system can automatically record and charge the toll.
