Always be diligent to check for suspect cases of anthrax (sudden death loss), it has been reported in every ND county at some point in time, therefore it is possible in nearly every pasture or even dry lots. With the frequent storms don't just suspect that lightning as the cause.

Anthrax Alert ⚠️

Anthrax case confirmed in Stark County.

Livestock owners are urged to take action to protect their animals from the disease, ESPECIALLY in areas where previous history. Vaccines are available. Reach out to your local veterinarian for assistance.

Anthrax is caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis. The bacterial spores can lie dormant in the ground for decades and become active under ideal conditions, such as heavy rainfall, flooding and drought. Animals are exposed to the disease when they graze or consume forage or water contaminated with the spores.

During calving season we often stress the importance of first colostrum. If it can be provided from the dam (mother) that is best, but replacement powdered colostrum can be a valuable tool to help provide an immune system in a newborn calf.

Unlike humans, calves are born without immunity. 🐄 The cow’s unique placenta blocks antibody transfer during gestation, leaving calves defenseless at birth.

Colostrum is their lifeline, providing:
❗️Immunity through IgG (immunoglobulins).
❗Essential nutrients, growth factors, and energy to support survival and growth.
