"My pet has fleas and my groomer is booked for days, weeks, maybe months. Now what?"
First off, this should always be one of your first steps because it places your pets well-being first and reduces the spread of fleas to other homes/pets. Capstar is an oral medicine that you can give to your pet, even if they are already on a flea and tick medicine. It's intended in case of an emergency and works for 24hrs, but super effective in the beginning to make your pet and home flea-free again. You can also pick it up at places like Wal-Mart, which you can generally find all over the place these days. Fleas have a 2 week life cycle, if they are in your home and/or pet, generally treating bedding, carpets, toys, yard, everything, should be done diligently for 6 weeks to ensure any eggs or larvae that may have escaped the initial cleaning are killed before they can continue the cycle and spread. As a groomer and pet owner, I like natural flea deterrents around my home year-round as pests will hitch a ride on people to get to their next meal or even hop the fence between neighbors. Grow catnip, peppermint, rosemary, lemons and lemongrass. Lavender is also great as a deterrent. Using any of these scents in an essential oil diffuser or mixing them into a spritz for your hair is another way to protect yourself or your pet.
I had a client call exasperated because she even tried washing her dog in Dawn and it still had fleas. Dawn is great in an emergency, but shouldn't replace actual pet shampoos and do not use often or regularly because it will dry out your pet's skin and possibly lead to new issues. The reason you find it recommended for flea treatment is because it can work in a pinch. To have it work though, lather it into your pet's coat, avoiding eyes, nose and mouth and let it sit for at least 10 mins before rinsing your pet. At this time, you can then use a fine tooth flea comb to run through the coat and pick out the dead fleas, rinse off the comb in a tub of hot water and let them drown if any are still moving.
