The 6 stages of puppy training:

Stage 1- The find: You've found the one! You begin nesting and planning and idealizing.

Stage 2- The honeymoon phase- Your pup comes home and is flipping adorable.

Stage 3- The shark mouth- Holy crap, this dog is a velociraptor. But still so cute.

Stage 4- The meltdown- The puppy is still cute but, in what feels like, an epic series of unfortunate events you may end up in the fetal position in a corner somewhere with a glass of vodka. (I get most of my calls at this phase)

Stage 5- The possession- Some monster has now taken the place of your sweet puppy and everything they once knew is completely inaccessible. This is adolescence and no amount of training will protect you from the perfect storm of hormones and growth spurts and zoomies and shark teeth and just. plain. awkwardness.

Stage 6- Perseverance - You can do it!!! Just keep being consistent and maintain your boundaries as well as your patience. It ain't easy being a puppy!

These stages are normal but handling this roller coaster is a delicate task. Keep your dogs well exercised, well rested and Train! Train! Train!

Training is a lifestyle. It's not just for puppyhood. Socialization, structured exercise, mental stimulation and a thorough education are ongoing.

So glad to have all you puppy parents on board for the ride!

This guy is starting to take training more seriously all of a sudden! He really nailed his first novice run (wish I had that one on video!). His second run was not held bad other than a dog interruption right near the fence BUT I whistled him off the distraction and was allowed to resend because of the interference . Phew!!! He was amazing! I’m so proud of this dapper gentleman!

Miley scored an Intermediate title this weekend in AKC Fetch! She also got an Advanced pass under her belt! The weather made for some challenging conditions and the dogs were definitely put through the paces. Proud of my girl for rebounding and nailing her 2nd Advanced run!!

This dog is absolutely crushing it. In just her third herding games session she’s made huge gains in impulse control and handler engagement. She’s developing solid directional fluency, building thoughtful approach mechanics, strengthening spatial awareness, and establishing self control while high arousal.

My favorite part: watching listening and responsiveness emerge organically through the work itself—without a single formal obedience session.
