City of Emporia Animal Shelter The Animal Shelter or Animal Control can be reached at 434-634-7320 for any questions or concerns that you may have. The fee of the license is $10.

For information on animals that are available for adoption please visit PetFinder.com under the City of Emporia Animal Shelter. We are a public animal shelter that serves the animals and residents within the city limits of Emporia, Virginia. For all animals that come into the shelter they will be held for a stray hold period of:
7 days WITH NO COLLAR
10 days WITH COLLAR

d the animal will then belong to the City of Emporia per Code of Virginia, Code 3.2-6546 subdivision 1 through 5 subsection D. For animals returned to their owners there will be a $10 impound fee and $5 PER day that the animal resides at the shelter. In order to claim your animals, you MUST provide some sort of proof that you are the owner. Documentation must match your name and address on your ID Card. Types of proof we accept are:

-Rabies Certificate
-City Dog License
-Vet Bills

In the City of Emporia, you must obtain a dog license every year between January 1st- January 31st. The dog licenses can be purchased at the City of Emporia Treasurer's office. You can only obtain the license with proof of rabies vaccination. The City of Emporia only allows you to have 3 dogs on your property at one time.
