Dr. Rick Thompson has the honor of traveling to Excel K-9 Services Inc. in Hiram, Ohio several times throughout the year to educate new K9 officer handlers on emergency first aid and proper veterinary care.

This training is so important because it helps our community police officers care for their K9 partners and allows them to be able to do their jobs safely and effectively.

While there, Dr. Thompson also provides veterinary care for Excel K9’s personal explosive and drug detection dogs. Many of these hardworking dogs help keep fans and our local communities safe at our Guardians, Browns, and Cavs games ⚾️ 🏈 🏀

We are proud of Dr. Thompson’s dedication to supporting working dogs and the officers who serve alongside them!

We had a couple of feathery friends 🦆 in the office! One of them had a scuffle with their chicken roomie so Dr. Thompson checked them out; he even had a helper 👧🏼 🩺

Today we dropped off all of the donations our amazing clients brought in for Multiple Breed Rescue. We are so proud of being a part of the wonderful work that MBR does everyday and of our clients for answering the call to help out too ❤️‍🩹 Thank you to everyone who contributed in one way or another! Multiple Breed Rescue (MBR) is a foster-based rescue right here in the Elyria/Grafton area. While they do have a facility, their mission is to place dogs into loving foster homes as quickly as possible while they wait for their forever families.

What many people may not realize is just how much they do—and how proud we are to support them. Here at Elyria Animal Hospital, we provide a significant portion of their veterinary care because we truly believe in their mission.

✨ In 2025 alone:
• 207 dogs were taken in at the farm
• 211 dogs were adopted into loving homes
• Since their founding, 3,727 dogs have been rescued

How amazing is that?!

💸 Their major expenses in 2025 included:
• Veterinary care: $154,860.05
• Food: $15,131.83
• Medications: $9,409.54
• Supplies (dog, paper, office): $17,418.39

MBR is able to continue saving lives thanks to donations, fundraisers, grants, and an incredibly dedicated network of volunteers.

At Elyria Animal Hospital, we believe caring for our team is just as important as caring for your pets. After our monthly staff meeting, our team enjoyed some much needed downtime with a little art therapy together 🎨❤️

While veterinary medicine is an incredibly rewarding profession, it also carries one of the highest su***de rates in the country. Mental health struggles within this field are very real, and supporting the emotional wellbeing of our doctors, technicians, and assistants is something we take very seriously.

Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, we have been making it a priority to do a few extra things that help heal our souls, strengthen our team, and remind one another that it’s okay to take care of ourselves too.

Our weekly staff spotlight is probably now considered our monthly staff spotlight 😄, but we are continuing to move forward ➡️

Our Staff Spotlight this time, is KJ! She is one of our amazing assistants here at Elyria Animal Hospital, please read about her below. We feel that it’s important and also comforting to know and see who your pet is in the care of ❤️

KJ’s love for animals started at a young age when she tried to rescue an abandoned birds nest; and it’s been growing ever since. She loves helping pets feel safe and cared for here at the clinic. Outside of work, she enjoys writing, drawing pets portraits, and coloring with her son. KJ is starting school this summer to become a registered veterinary technician to continue her career here at Elyria Animal Hospital, and we’re super proud of her for it!

Fun Fact: KJ is one of 3(!) Kaylees that we have working here! She is also a published author, and an AMAZING portrait artist for pets.
