A special Saturday.
This afternoon, our friends Sammy & Louie visited us. We went for an adventure along a country road to an abandoned school that looked like it had closed down during the pandemic. We rounded the bases of the old softball field, slowed down to enjoy sniffing, and admire horses.

We came home through the big field, socialized with the other pups, and then got comfy indoors on the recliners, and shared some cuddles.

After checking these boxes, we went outside to stretch our legs and take in a glorious sunset. 🌅

Life, it’s about the little things. And better shared.

When we change our wording and think of the real need behind the behaviour. We can meet it with more purpose and calm.

Happy hump day on the Ranch!
Foster Irma went for her first check up at the vet & did great.

The pack is enjoying romping & relaxing on the freshly mowed big field. Sharing the joy with the fur kids never gets old.

"Wow! Is that what it means?"😮
Oh that word!

Socialisation is a word that conjures up visions of cute puppies playing with other dogs and pups. Socialisation "means" interacting with others doesn't it?
Yes and no.

It's not a great word to describe what should be a priority.
Acclimation is a far better term we should all start to use.
Acclimation to wet surfaces, stairs, wind, even standing in the rain.
Yes, it absolutely includes other animals too.

The trap is when people make other dogs or pups the main focus during that very important developmental time in a young puppies life.
We may forget that they haven't seen or heard a bus before.
Crowds of people aren't thought of.
A wheelchair or a scooter can be very unsettling for a young dog if they haven't come across one earlier in life.

Of course we do want our young puppies to interact and play with others.
There's a fine balance here too.
They shouldn't play with all others they come across, they shouldn't meet all others either.
Those experiences with others need well thought out and supervised.
Why?
Acclimation is still the goal. We want them to feel part of the world, but not develop such a strong emotional pull that they must greet and insist on playing with every dog.
Or they can start to physically pull you towards them.
Every dog they see.
Every walk.

If we allow puppies to meet and play with all others, that can be a very short path to a young dog that "insists" they must interact with all others.
That is what they learned when they were younger.

Choose your play partners wisely.

Think of everything this world has to offer and what you encounter everyday.

How can we expose them positively and carefully?
That's the goal.

Not "socialisation".

🐾🐶Not every dog wants to meet your child—and that’s okay.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Even friendly dogs can become overwhelmed, anxious, or scared when approached by children. Some dogs simply don’t have the social skills or confidence to handle unpredictable movements, loud voices, or sudden hugs.

Sometimes other pet parents will allow your child to pet their dog because they think it is safe when it really isn't or they are training their dog using your child as part of the training.

Either way, these interactions are frequently unsafe for the child and for the dog.

As adults, it’s our job to advocate for both dogs and kids:
👉 Always think about what is at risk before you ask if your child can pet an unknown dog. Is it worth a bite?
👉 Teach children to respect a dog’s space.
👉 Watch for signs of stress—lip licking, turning away, yawning, stiff body language.
👉 Keep interactions short, calm, and positive.

Let’s protect children and dogs by setting them up for success—not stress. ❤️

COPYCAT DOGS

It really does matter who we hang out with or spend time with because our social circle or who we live with, influences our behaviour, emotional state and habits. This can have either a positive or negative influence.

The same can be said for all social animals, our dogs included.

When behaviour is contagious and copied by social animals, the scientific word for this is “Allelomimetic” and although it’s a bit of a tongue-twister to pronounce it simply means copying what others are doing.

In the wild, animals depend on allelomimetic behaviour for survival. An example is if a member of a group spots a threat and starts running, the group will immediately follow, without too much conscious thought – it’s an automatic response, making it harder to be attacked.

This innate behaviour in dogs can present in both positive and negative ways.

Bringing a new dog into a home where the resident dog has unwanted behaviours, is never a good idea. There’s a risk of ending up with 2 dogs with issues instead of 1.

It’s always best to address unwanted behaviour before adding another dog, but calmness, contentment, regulation, self-confidence and other wanted behaviours are also contagious.

It’s far easier said than done and every situation is different, but if our dogs are going to copy behaviours, we need to be mindful in exposing them to what we want them to copy.

One of the most common questions I hear is:
"My dog growls at my kids. How do I stop this?"

But here's the thing.
Instead of asking how to stop the growl, ask how to stop the REASON the dog is growling in the first place.
