Players for Pits, NFP

Players for Pits, NFP Players For Pits is a 501c3 non-profit organization, based in Illinois that features professional athletes who are against animal abuse.

Our Philosophies:

Players for Pits is dedicated towards advocating and implementing responsible pet ownership for the dogs in our program. Our adoption process is structured towards the ability to consider the needs of both the applicant(s) as well as the dog(s). There is no set time frame on how long it can take for an adoption to take place as each situation is as unique as the individual dogs

in our rescue. Every dog adopted out will be current on vaccinations, altered, dewormed, microchipped to the rescue and tested for heartworm (age appropriate). Any dog taken in with a medical issue will be treated by the rescue with the best possible care administered by our vets. We do not put emphasis on “breed labeling” at Players for Pits. While we rationalize with breed stereotypes and tendencies, it is impossible to accurately predict behavior of a mixed breed dog based on assumed physical breed traits. Scientifically, less than 1% of a dogs genes determine their outward appearance, therefore we consider each dog in our rescue an individual with their own unique personality and characteristics. We urge all applicants to apply for a dog based on the dog and not their assumptions of personality based on what breed the dog looks like. Players for Pits is a part of many educational programs, including community outreach, spay and neuter programs, as well as canine assisted therapy work. Every member of the PFP team is active in helping community members around us while educating the public to become more involved in animal welfare. Our goal is to increase the amount of awareness in the community to help lead our cities toward a collective “no-kill” status. PFP seeks to dismantle the negative stereotypes surrounding “pit bulls” in our society. We will help our adopters if they would like their “pit bull” mix dog enrolled in Canine Good Citizenship class and continue on towards active therapy work with their dog. Our alumni participate in many programs that give back to the community and we aim to increase the number of working therapy “pit bulls” yearly. Because Chicago is a high traffic area for dog fighting and breeding, we work within those targeted areas to spay and neuter dogs and educate the owners about overpopulation. We work with the police to combat dog fighting and urge anyone with tips to immediately report them to their local authorities. We can also direct you to anonymous tip lines.

Ivy’s survival so far feels like a miracle. Her botched c-section appears to have happened recently, and if it weren’t for a citizen dropping her off at an emergency vet, she may not have made it this far. The infection is being treated, but she’s not out of the woods yet.

There’s obviously so much more to Ivy and Iris’s story, details we can’t share publicly... but what we can say is that Ivy is fighting, and we’ll be by her side every step of the way to give her the best chance at a full recovery.

To those responsible for these botched c-sections: we know you’re watching. Do the right thing and come forward on your own. Email us at [email protected] or message us here. Let’s talk.

The absolute last thing we wanted to do was share with you all that ANOTHER mama dog with a very recent botched/at-home c-section was dropped off at a city ER at 1 am on 8/9/2025.

The staff reached out to us immediately after seeing Iris's story last week. When we spoke to the doctor she noticed some similarities however instead of crafting thread, this time whoever played "doctor" used what appears to be fishing line.

Ivy is a senior mama who recently had a back-alley c-section. Someone found her wandering and the smell coming from her was overpowering. Despite her situation, she's. However, this is going to be a long battle for Ivy. Her body is old, abused, emaciated, and infected.

Right now Ivy is getting medical care but we need your help. We don't think Ivy is related to Iris but we will continue to investigate.

After losing Iris, we wanted to give an update on our parvo survivor Amaya Papaya.

Amaya us truly loving life and is fully cleared from her parvo battle. She was a tough one being about 1lb in weight and so young, but thanks to amazing vet care and the new parvo monoclonal antibody injection, she has a second chance at life!

Amaya is currently in a foster home (who may end up keeping her) but anyone interested is welcome to submit an app. We may be a pit bull rescue but we take chihuahuas a lot and we can always keep our eyes peeled for others like Amaya if you submit an app and don't get the chance to adopt her.

We want to thank you all for supporting Amaya Papayas journey and while we wish there weren't other medical dogs that need us, we will be ready when one does.

This morning, Iris took her last breath. The amount of hate and rage we hold toward the people who let Iris get to this point is immeasurable and what they did to her is unforgivable.

Iris was too weak to reposition herself, so part of her care involved gently rotating her to prevent further complications. But when they turned her this morning, her blood pressure and heart rate began to spike and then she began seizing. What started as a focal seizure quickly worsened. Iris then had a full, heart stopping seziure and flat lined.

They managed to bring her back briefly, but she could no longer breathe on her own. That’s when they called us and we knew we had to let her go. There was no coming back.

I spent a few minutes crying and even though I wasnt there, I felt her leave us. I felt her pain leave and as it did I felt my heart harden. Overwhelmingly, I felt rage, anger, and resentment take over, because this didn’t have to happen.

She didn’t need a miracle, she needed real medical intervention, not “care” from people with no qualifications to be treating her. If she had gotten the help she needed, she’d still be alive today. Iris didn’t die peacefully in a loving home. She died because people failed her, over and over again. From the ones who bred her, used her, and butchered her body, to the ones who stood by in silence — you are ALL complicit.

To those who are involved in or have information about this vile backyard breeding/surgery operation, if you choose to stay silent, you are just as guilty. Your silence protects abusers and condemns more dogs to the same fate as Iris. You are responsible for every life that continues to suffer because of your inaction. Do the right thing. Speak up. Come forward.

Iris was used, starved, and sliced open with no anesthesia. She was stitched with thread that belonged in a craft kit, not a surgical suite. She was bred until her body gave out and then discarded like trash and left to die alone. This is the reality of backyard breeding.

The people who did this to her are your neighbors. They are the ones you buy cute micro-bully-XL-gator-blood-razor-edge-bullsh*t-description-inserted-here pit bull puppies from. They are the ones who use these dogs to profit, but behind every one of those litters is a dog like Iris, suffering in silence, used up and discarded. She wasn’t treated like a living soul. She was a commodity. A profit source. A means to an end and nothing more.

Iris deserved so much more than the life she was given. She should have known safety. She should have known kindness. She should have had the chance to heal. And she should have known love, not just from us and her veterinary team, but from the very beginning of her life.

Instead, she became a symbol of how broken this system is.

To those of you who loved her from afar: thank you. She felt that love. I believe that. And I promise, her suffering will not be in vain.

Thank you to each and every one of you who donated or shared to support Iris’s care. Because of you, we were able to give her the best possible chance. Thank you to her veterinary team. Your compassion meant everything.

To Iris, rest easy, little one. You were deeply loved by so many people who never even got the chance to meet you. We will celebrate your resilience, and we will never stop fighting in your name.

Hi all, I wanted to take a minute to try to put into words just how much Iris & her story has impacted us. I started Players for Pits in 2013 as a way to help save pit bulls in Chicago. I had no background in animal welfare except caring about animals. I fostered a few dogs before I started this rescue & I realized there were things I could do differently when I found my niche in medical cases.

I have always been pragmatic in chaotic situations. I've been able to slow down my thoughts under stress, so finding myself in the situation to help some of the most severe cases of abuse felt like this was what I was meant to do as my contribution to society.

It's been 12 years now & our team at PFP has truly seen it all. We have even seen Iris's case before but this one hit different. We received an anonymous tip and we know for certain now that Iris was butchered in an abandoned building. A group of people who breed these dogs decided, without a veterinary license or medical degree, to cut her open and take her puppies out. We know that they used REGULAR THREAD to suture her. Not sterile sutures - regular thread you can buy at a crafting store. We know that a new nursing mom was brought in and when Iris's puppies took to her, they left Iris there to die.

There is still a lot we don't know but what we do know will haunt us and will stay with us forever. Our group watched a video of this and we saw Iris's skeleton of a body on a table & we watched the fear in her eyes as she awaited her fate.

These monsters left her to die. I'm not saying this to be dramatic but to help you envision the series of events that led Iris to where she is now. Witnessing evil to animals is such a horrible thing but it's happening all around us, every day. You have to speak up. You have to share their stories. YOU HAVE TO CONDEMN IT.

Iris is still in critical condition after her surgery... that she had with a real surgeon. She needed blood transfusions to keep her alive under anesthesia because her body wasn't handling it well. And she is getting oxygen as she wakes up because her body is still struggling.

There is more to come. Please pray for Iris.

GRAPHIC WARNING.

We need information about what happened to Iris. If you know anything please message us or email [email protected].

There are 3 warning slides but the video at the end is truly heartbreaking. This is how Iris was. All we know is that she was found in an abandoned building. Allegedly the kids who found her told an adult who sought help. A citizen picked her up in the middle of the night took this video before bringing her to . We are so grateful to her but the neighborhood has to know something.

Right now we need to know what happened to her to save her life. We don't think this is pyometra after seeing the last slide. But we heard there is another video or info or that someone knows something.

➡️➡️All we care about is saving her life but we need to know what happened.

In the meantime, we are calling on everyone to share her posts and help us raise money to save her. Iris deserves to live and know a good, protected, and loved life.
