HELLO!!!

Organization day for seeds. Broke down and bought "photo organizers" for my flower/vegetable seed collection. $12 at Micheal's delivered to my door, quite the steal! So I bought 3! Pluse sticker labels.....woohoo!

Also had to scratch a growing itch so I started a few Orange Hat micro tomato plants (for the patio and greenstalk planters) and some onions to test germination rates on old onion seeds and some homegrown saved seeds from 2024 (homegrown seeds for the win, great germination rate!!) I saved some onions that went to seed last year (since onions are finicky lil farts) I utilized the onion going to seed as an opportunity to save seeds (either yellow onion or walla walla sweet) it'll be a surprise but either way.....we got onions.

On another onion note, onion seeds do not keep for years, intact they are about the only seed that will not keep for at least a few years. So if your onion seeds are from say 2022 like a bunch of mine were....toss them. Don't waste your time!

Greenhouse is to be finished soon!! So we can get our grow on cause the growing time in coming soon!

Lettuce, peas and brassicas (brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower) will be getting started next with another round of onions i just got in the mail (zebrune shallots and utah sweet Spanish onion) Right after that my hot and sweet peppers (they take a long time to get going) and following peppers is the tomatoes....which we are dialing back on this year. I take up so much space with tomatoes plants every year....that's ending this year.

Happy growing!

Well first swarm of my season yesterday, I don't expect them till early to mid may.....why is this year diffrent? I did feed protein Patty's for the first time this year so that contributed for me this year. But it seems so many others are having swarms early too. I'd post my redneck enginuity video to get them down but I cuss a lot....

I was not prepared yet for swarms and had to scramble together a box and random frames to get them in something. It will work for now till I go get a new hive this weekend to house them up in so they will have to tolerate their temporary new digs till then.

I climbed up into my tractor bucket to cut limps out of this tall cedar tree with my long extended saw but was still not long enough to get the branch with the bees. Got the excavator to try and reach up to hit the branch, that wasn't tall enough either. So back to the drawing board.... I got a chunk of wood, tied a long section of tape used for temp electric fencing for horses onto it (it's light) and chucked that up and over the branch. Then gave a few hard jerks to shake off the swarm bulk down into the hive I had placed under them. Worked like a charm, i was impressed with myself.....but a few of the ladies were pretty pissy! They kept coming at me! I've never had a pissy swarm. I can typically hive a swarm with out a suit but not this batch of bees.

SQUEEEEE!!!!!!
Look, just look!!!!

The broke down harbor freight joke of a greenhouse that didn't last 6 months is getting a huge and permanent face lift. After looking at the broke down pile of junk for 2+ years, my fantastic husband and brother in law, Doug have built the skeleton of the new and improved green house that will last ages! After next weekend it will be done, painted, covered in clear corrugated strong plastic pannels, exaust fan and door installed....... to then fill with all my "precious" garden starts I've been starting and harboring in the basement and livingroom.

So so thankful for them doing this. Such great timing.... Just in time for hardening off the tomato plants, pepper plants and marigolds to then starting the squashes, cucumbers and sunflowers.

Such a happy sight! 😊

May and June is coming quick and is honeybee swarm catching time for me. I just fed all the bees, we actually over wintered 4 hives and all 4 survived. I'm hearing from a few local beekeepers that lost a lot of their hives...they keep more than I do. 4 is my max. So with my early spring feeding of pollen patties, they will grow in numbers faster and will have some swarms for sure.

I at one point had 7 hives, too many for me to keep up with and they came from several bought packages or nucs from California grown bees....I have not had much luck keeping bees that came from California alive. We went almost 2 years without bees till I watched a wild swarm catch its self in an old hive I was too lazy to put away. That started us in bees again. We also have a giant maple tree in the back of our 20 acres that has had a hive in it since we moved her 7 years ago. Since that wild swarm caught itself in my hive I have multiplied it into now 4 hives and sold a few swarms last year they kicked off.

So, if you want a swarm of honeybees homes in your hive, get ahold of me. I need a nuc or hive to put them in. $150 per swarm. These are local wild docile bees.
