A few nights ago we worked on familiar ground. When my late buddy Tracker was a 10 month old pup he tracked and found a deer 3/4 of a mile from this spot for this kids dad. Fast forward several years and they called again for his son. Parked in the same spot and walked to the same spot. Started in almost the same spot. His dads deer circled the hill the opposite way though. A prayer lead the track and then we were off. Scout worked his way to the point of loss and he spazzed out for a few minutes because they had walked around a little bit and he was trying track the scent they disperced. But i saw a familiar fence not far away in the woods and i wondered. Could this be like years ago when the exact same thing happened with Scouts brother? So i walked down there and sure enough a drop of blood where the deer landed when it jumped the fence. I set Scout across the fence and he finished up the track in quick order. The 2 tracks point of loss were maybe 50 yards apart. They crossed the fence within 20 yards. Watching Scout work that hill was like reliving an old dream in the best way possible.

Scout doesny stay still for pictures and the pictures show his excitment.

I have been asked if we are still doing it. The short answer is yes. Also yes i lost both of my boys in a 9 month span last year and i was lucky to have had another season with Copper who was the OG. I even lost the best rabbit hound the world has ever seen in my own and my friends opinion. I do have a half brother to Tracker and his name is Scout. He looks just like Tracker and has his drive but is 20lbs lighter and behaves way better around strangers. IYKYK. Yesterday we had an easy track. Honestly we were not needed. They could have found this one easy in the daylight. But as they left to get the atv i set Copper and Trackers collars on the deer and sat above on a rock and watched Scout. Where we go they go. He looked just like big brother. I reminisced on times passed by. Over the last 6 seasons i have traveled through 3 states tracking and i have hiked through some amazing country. I have met some really nice people that have become friends. I have met other trackers that have become family. It is all because of my amazing 4 legged friends. I was trained by hound dogs as i forgot everything i thought to be fact about how to find deer. Yesterday i thought about the last 5 months of my own struggle of if i would keep doing it or not. What i realized is my why. My why is us! My why is to make memories with my friend. A hounds life is fleeting and if i am lucky ill have another 9-12 years with Scout. Some day the memories of the country walked together and the deer we chased will be all i have left of him as it is for Copper and Tracker. Those memories will be enough for it to have been worth the loss. So yes we are still doing and we are here for the challenge.

Chapter 7 and and chapter 1 at the same time. Lets go get em Scout!

Make it a good one.
