(Picking up from our August 7 post on )
The social life of the young Garcia family grew and included many events reported in the newspaper. That their lives were newsworthy suggests the stature they had achieved in their new hometown. There were masquerade balls (G.S. went as a girl) and Fourth of July barbeques hosted by Saturnina and G.S on the banks of the Humboldt River. And there were trips back to California for the wedding of Garcia's younger brother, Jesus.
Before the end of 1898, G.S. produced a six inch by nine inch, 32-page catalogue. The publication was all graphic plate engravings that gave a fully accurate picture of what each product looked like. Ads referred to this publication as his second catalogue, counting the bulletin he issued previously as his first. He realized the importance of accurate pictures in marketing what his saddle shop could produce, and he began to use the same graphic plate engravings in his newspaper advertisements and business stationery.
The end of the decade and the century was looking both prosperous and fulfilling for the young family. In keeping with what his father had taught him about the value of owning property, G.S. and Saturnina bought some land. They were also able to add several employees to the rolls at the saddlery. Garcia used some of their additional profits to enter into a partnership with H.J. Jones, Elko's postmaster, to purchase a band of sheep.
On September 6, 1899, Saturnina gave birth to a baby girl named Irene.
Margarita was then three years old and Walter was one and a half. They were a family of five, and it appeared that their early Santa Margarita dreams were beginning to be fulfilled.
