As we begin to come into Spring, you know what that means… it’s the season for The Gentleman’s Makeover, The Great Snipping, Brain Surgery. However you slice it, let’s talk castration!
🥜Castration is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in horses and is an important part of responsible horse ownership. Gelding a stallion can improve behavior, safety, and herd compatibility while preventing unwanted breeding.
🙋🏽♀️Why Castrate a Horse?
✔ Helps reduce stallion-like behaviors such as aggression, mounting, and distraction around mares
✔ Makes horses easier and safer to handle and train
✔ Allows horses to integrate more safely into group turnout situations
✔ Prevents unplanned breeding
⏱️When Can Horses Be Gelded?
C**ts can typically be castrated 6–12 months of age, but the procedure can be safely performed later in life as well.
✂️The Procedure
Equine castrations are usually performed with the horse being induced with anesthetic drugs (TIVA- Total IntraVenous Anesthsia) The veterinarian removes both testicles through small incisions that are intentionally left open to allow drainage and reduce swelling.
❤️🩹Recovery & Aftercare
Proper aftercare is KEY to a smooth recovery.
🐴Most horses recover quickly, but owners should expect:
• Swelling and mild drainage for several days
• Daily exercise (such as hand walking or turnout) to help reduce swelling
• Keeping the area clean and monitored
• Following your veterinarian’s instructions for medications or pain management
The colts are usually able to return to normal activity within 2-3 weeks, though mild swelling can occasionally last a bit longer.
⚠️ Call your veterinarian if you notice:
• Excessive swelling
• Fever or lethargy
• Continuous, excessive bleeding
• Foul-smelling discharge
• The horse acting painful or uncomfortable
‼️Did You Know?
Even after castration, geldings may still be fertile for up to 60 days? So, it is best they be kept away from mares during that time.

This does not apply to breeding stallions in an appropriate breeding program.
