I am going to be making weekly training posts on NorthWind Riding Academy that will detail things like long lining, side reins, first rides, and more. If you are interested in a behind the scenes experience feel free to go look and follow that page. For my lesson clients I am proofreading Workbook Level 2 and starting Level 3 and getting started on my ground work levels. But here are photos of horses just being started under saddle. I have a great group of young individuals that are going to be so much fun under saddle.

When starting a horse or restarting a horse side reins can be a handy tool to use especially used properly. A horse is not trapped by tight ungiving side reins. Instead we use a length that allows them to move their head up and down, nose in and out as they learn where the bit pressure is the most comfortable to carry. We don't force a horse behind the vertical and I always want my horse to calmly go forward without frantic feet. Some horses figure out how to carry a bit quietly and quickly. Others take longer. This is a picture of Ralph wearing side reins after at least 2 years off. Broke horses will come back to work much faster than a youngster that has never worn any kind of gear.

Long lining is such an important step in training and I refuse to step on one without it. The first few times in long lines I'm not asking for anything other than forward and letting the horse figure out neck placement amd confidence. Tension is not heavy on the lines and there is slack they can stretch against if they choose. At this stage of the game we are not looking for a show look at all.

Horse training is in "microblocks" just like our school. We start very first with halter breaking and getting the horses used to human touch. Then we teach them how to tie and tie confidently. Halter breaking and tying quietly teach horses how to give to pressure and be ok in their own skin. Then we can start ponying, lunging, adding a surcingle, loose side reins, long lines, and a saddle. Once they quietly handle all the pieces we add our weight and move into first rides. Making a nice horse isn't a race and it builds slowly. Rushing these steps can cause the entire horse to fall apart and lose confidence. We don't expect our children to go from kindergarten to college in one year. Why do the horses get the stress of becoming finished horses in that time frame?

So often I hear kids can't ride in the winter but they can. They just have to embrace a different wardrobe. While layers, gloves, and coveralls will not be counted as runway fashion it does keep you warm.
