Fire work season is here…please remember your pets may not like or tolerate fireworks. Here are some tips to help keep them safe and calm this 4th of July!
Create a Safe Space:
Den-like environment: Provide a crate or a quiet corner with familiar items like blankets, toys, and a bed. Soundproofing: Close windows and curtains to minimize noise and flashes. White noise: Play calming music, white noise, or turn on the TV or radio to mask the firework sounds.
Provide Comfort and Distraction:
Stay calm: Dogs pick up on your emotions, so try to remain calm and reassuring. Affection: Offer gentle petting, cuddles, or a massage. Distraction: Engage your dog with their favorite toys, puzzle toys, or chews. High-value treats: Use treats to create positive associations with the sounds or to encourage them to focus on something other than the fireworks. Consider a Thundershirt or similar wrap, which applies gentle, even pressure to help reduce anxiety. Consult with your veterinarian about medication options for severe anxiety.
Other Considerations:
Early walks: Take your dog for walks earlier in the day before the fireworks start. Indoor time: Keep your dog indoors when fireworks are being let off. Microchipping and ID: Ensure your dog is microchipped and has an ID tag with your contact information. Gradual desensitization: For dogs with extreme fear, consider a gradual desensitization program with a professional trainer or veterinary behaviorist.

Keep the pets off the pavement in the afternoon hours this weekend and next week as air temperatures reach into the 90s.

👉 Paws can burn in just a few seconds during the afternoon hours when high temperatures reach into the upper 80s & 90s ‼️

👉 This is also a reminder to NEVER leave pets and kids in the car with windows rolled up and AC off when temperatures get this hot‼️
