Not only was it National Dispatcher Week, but it is also:
🌟 National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week 🌟
Every second full week of April, we proudly recognize the hard-working, compassionate individuals who serve our communities and our animals.
🐾 What do Animal Control Officers do?
Animal Control Officers do so much more than pick up stray animals. They seek justice for abused, neglected, and abandoned animals. They conduct humane investigations, rescue the helpless, and protect people from dangerous animals. Each day, they encounter sick, lost, aggressive, and injured animals, often under emotionally difficult circumstances. They also perform crucial public safety duties, including bite quarantines and rabies prevention. Most importantly, they educate the public on the proper way to better care for the pets we love.
Today, we’d like to shine a light on the incredible officers at the Elk City Animal Shelter:
🐾 Amber Stepp – Animal Control Supervisor
Amber has been with the Elk City Animal Shelter for nearly 5 years. When asked why she chose this line of work, she shared: “I couldn’t do your job” is a common saying we all hear. But if speaking for the silent, nurturing what’s reliant, helping what is in need, offering shelter when shelters are needed, educating the uneducated, and offering help, comfort, or mercy to a soul that was lost or forgotten—That’s a job I will do.”
🐾 Krystal Stone – Animal Control Officer
Krystal has been with the Elk City Animal Shelter for almost 4 years. She says: “I grew up on a ranch in Texas with all sorts of animals — from show horses to cattle, hogs, poultry, rabbits, cats, and dogs. I've always wanted to work in the animal field. Being an Animal Control Officer allows me to be a voice for animals who cannot speak for themselves. I take pride in working with rescues to save as many as possible. This job isn’t easy. The heartbreaks are never ending but knowing I’ve done everything I can helps a little.”
🐾 Ashley Brown – Animal Control Officer
Ashley has served as an ACO for 1½ years. She shared: “My whole life, I’ve always had a connection to animals. I chose to become an ACO to be an advocate for animals who do not have a voice for themselves.”
🐾 Misty Garling – Animal Control Officer
Misty joined the team just over a year ago. She shared “I have always had a love for animals, wild and domestic. I have always wanted to be in the animal field but chose to marry and raise a family first. But along the way, we ended up with horses, cattle, goats and chickens. I have always read everything I could on animals, illnesses and training. When the opportunity came up to join Animal Control in Elk City, I jumped at the chance and put my application in. I was more than excited when I was hired and became a part of the team. Now I can help protect and educate for these wonderful creatures that bring so much joy to our lives”.
All our Animal Control Officers’ compassion, dedication, and strength make a real difference every single day. We are incredibly grateful to have them on our team and in our community.
Please join us in thanking all Animal Control Officers for the vital work they do!
