🐾 Why Do Groomers Shave Matted Dogs Instead of Dematting? 🐾
This is one of the most common questions we hear, and the answer comes down to one thing: your dog's comfort and safety.
When a dog's coat becomes matted, those tangles aren't just sitting on top of the fur—they tighten against the skin like a blanket that's shrinking. Mats can cause: • Pain and discomfort
• Skin irritation and bruising
• Restricted movement
• Moisture trapped against the skin, leading to infections
• Hidden sores, hot spots, and parasites
While it may seem like brushing the mats out is the better option, dematting can be extremely painful and stressful for your dog. In many cases, it would take hours of pulling and tugging on sensitive skin, which is not something we feel is humane.
For matted coats, the kindest and safest option is often to shave underneath the mats and give your dog a fresh start. Once the coat grows back, we can work together on a grooming schedule and home maintenance plan to keep your pup comfortable and mat-free.
