The Adams County SPCA Advises Residents to Use Caution Following Confirmed Rabies Case
The Adams County SPCA is notifying residents that a stray cat found in the 800 block of Stone Jug Road in Butler Township, Gettysburg, has tested positive for rabies.
While rabies is uncommon, it is a serious disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans and pets. We encourage residents in the surrounding area to exercise caution when encountering any stray animals or wildlife.
Please remember:
* Do not approach, handle, or attempt to rescue stray animals that appear sick, injured, unusually aggressive, unusually friendly, disoriented, or behaving abnormally.
* Keep your pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Rabies vaccination is not only required by law for dogs and inside cats, but it is also the best protection against this deadly disease.
* Do not allow pets to roam outdoors unattended. Keeping pets supervised or safely contained helps reduce the risk of exposure to rabid wildlife.
* If you observe wildlife acting strangely such as stumbling, appearing unusually tame, showing aggression, excessive drooling, or paralysis, please contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission at (833) PGC-HUNT (742-4868).
* If you are bitten or scratched by any animal, immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention as soon as possible. Prompt medical treatment is critical in preventing rabies infection.
The Adams County SPCA works closely with local and state agencies whenever a confirmed rabies case is identified. At this time, there is no reason for public alarm; however, awareness and prevention are essential in protecting both people and animals.
