It's hump day, all! Great job getting halfway through the week. As positive reinforcement, we've got another Work-Up Wednesday for you!

Patient: 11 month-old neutered Labrador/Miniature Poodle

Presented for: Separation anxiety/restlessness and generalized anxiety particularly with grooming

History: Not too much of a history on this boy since he came into us as just a pup! But he was a textbook "velcro" dog never left alone for more than a few minutes, and that's the way he liked it. As a Poodle mix, he also has hefty grooming requirements that he struggled getting comfortable with. Attempts to get his nails trimmed or a full-body grooming done, even with the help of Gabapentin, were unsuccessful.

Where we come in:

Many times vets or even owners can be hesitant to reach out to a Behaviorist early on and leverage behavior modifying medications. Dr. Emmons actually gets excited to see a young patient on her schedule. Not only are puppies super cute (duh!) but modifying behaviors and teaching owners appropriate management while a patient is still learning about the world can be lifechanging.

Grooming can also be a big trigger. With nails or non-shedding breeds, it's a bit of a snowball. The pet rejects care, hair gets more matted or nails get long, the patient gets more uncomfortable, and trying to address the hair or nails gets more painful. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do while moving toward getting comfortable with handling is to make the process as low stress as possible. We gave him some sedation; he had a nice nap and went home a new man with a fresh haircut and short nails. After his procedure, he was back to restfully sleeping and then allowed the owners to start working with him feeling much more comfortable in his own skin (literally). They have even been successful trimming his nails on their own with the help of behavior meds and lots of patience working him up to that point!

Here's your Work-Up Wednesday for the week!
(Photo not of actual patient but you'll get the point.)

Patient: 12 year-old spayed Domestic Shorthair

Presented for: Hyper-vocalization

History: This patient had always been a chatty cat but had slowly become more vocal and unsettled. Her owners did absolutely everything for her in terms of enrichment, husbandry, and what their regular veterinarian recommended. After a year of trialing four different behavior medications and working with a cat behavior analyst, her owners were still at a loss with her in constant distress (vocalizing, pacing, and not sleeping).

Where we come in: During a patient's initial behavior consult, if appropriate, it is helpful for Dr. Emmons to get a full physical exam as we would with a patient establishing for wellness/routine care. Upon this patient's physical exam, Dr. Emmons noted significant dental disease as well as a fractured canine, and a pain response during the extension of her right hip. Those findings were helpful, but knowing a symptom of hypertension can be restlessness and vocalization, Dr. Emmons also did a baseline blood pressure on the cat. What she found was an astounding systolic 210mmHg (normal is

Exciting new happenings at EVH!

Our veterinary assistant Marissa is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) and wants to share her awesomeness with our puppy patients to set them up on the right paw.

Partnered with Jake Belmont CPDT-KA from Red Pointy Dog Training, we will be offering a one-of-a-kind Puppy Training & Exposure Class right here at Eliot Veterinary Hospital. Not only will this class give your pup catered access and training with two amazing trainers, but it is also a unique opportunity to get them used to the veterinary setting in a low-stress environment. This is not a puppy play 'n' learn or socialization class, and will be primarily focused on gaining basic skills and confidence in a clinical setting.

Sounds awesome, right?! What are the the deetz?

Here's our first Work-Up Wednesday case!

Patient: 4 yr. old neutered Labrador Retriever

Presented for: Aggression toward other animals and children

History: This patient's owner initially reported to their regular veterinarian (rDVM) that the patient had *recently* started being "irritable and grumpy" in early 2025. The rDVM noted crepitus (crunching, grating, or popping) of the left elbow but stated the patient was "not painful". As a result, the owners were told to get a trainer for the "behavioral" changes. They went to a trainer who in classes noted that this dog was a perfectly behaved boy.

A few months later, the owners reached out to their rDVM stating there had been no improvement in the pet's behavior despite working closely with a trainer and asked about medication. At this visit, they were told the patient was overweight and given the recommendation of a few multi-purpose supplements such as fish oil.

Where we come in: Earlier this year, after some improvement on the supplements, the patient started to decline behaviorally again so the owners reached out to their rDVM who referred them to Dr. Emmons. During their behavior consult, Dr. Emmons quickly noted the way the patient moved and laid down/got up as an area of concern and recommended a sedated workup. A week later, he was in getting the works; X-rays of his joints, Michigan State Thyroid bloodwork to rule out hypothyroidism as a reason for his weight, and routine bloodwork for baseline.

The patient's x-rays read by a board-certified radiologist revealed degenerative joint disease in multiple joints as well as hip dysplasia. Ouch!

Takeaways/outcome: Imagine your joints are creaky, crunchy, and painful and another dog tries to jump on you to play, or a child moves quickly towards you, and your only option to say ouch is to use your mouth. That is all this patient was trying to say.

With a clean bill of health in terms of bloodwork, Dr. Emmons started him on a couple of medications for PAIN (not behavior) management. Within a week, the owners were delighted to see results in the way of a happier, more energetic dog. There's a road ahead - a referral to an orthopedic surgeon and weight loss to improve long-term quality of life - but we're thrilled to get this patient some much needed relief and improvement almost immediately!

It is very important to note that it is difficult sometimes to assess for pain in a veterinary visit. If it’s a quick exam that doesn’t allow for much movement, it’s tough to assess gait so video analysis of the pet at home is crucial. Additionally, when in the office pets are often in “fight, flight or freeze” and may hide their pain. Just because we don’t necessarily see it in an exam doesn’t mean it’s not there!
