Take a look around and you’ll start to understand why their eggs are just as beautifully different! 🌈🐓

One of my favorite parts of caring for a diverse flock is seeing just how unique each hen is… right down to the eggs she lays!

Depending on the breed and genetics of the hen, eggs can naturally come in shades of white, cream, tan, brown, blue, green, olive and even speckled varieties. 🤍🤎🧡🩵💚

So why don’t we usually see this rainbow at the grocery store?

Commercial egg farms typically raise specific high-producing breeds, creating eggs that are much more uniform in color, while a diverse flock like this one can produce a beautiful assortment!

And here’s another cool difference…

🥚 Freshly laid eggs have their own natural protection! They’re laid with a protective coating called the bloom, which helps seal the tiny pores in the shell. In the U.S., grocery-store eggs are washed and sanitized, removing much of this natural barrier, which is why they must remain refrigerated.

No matter the color, though, shell color doesn’t determine how nutritious or delicious an egg is. It’s simply another beautiful example of just how unique chickens can be.

Not a single hen is exactly the same… and neither are the beautiful little gifts they leave behind. 🥹

Apparently collecting eggs is a VERY closely supervised activity around here. 🤨🥚🐓

Every egg I picked up came with four little sets of eyes making sure I was handling with care. 👀

I’m not sure if they were supervising, counting inventory, or wondering why I was stealing their eggs… but clearly, no part of this job goes unmonitored. 😄

The hardest part of being a pet sitter is the tremendous heartache that comes with saying goodbye to so many amazing furry friends. 💔

They are not just clients… they are family.

Swishey Sue is one of those dogs who will live on in my heart and in my everyday life forever. She was truly one of a kind, and there will never be another quite like her.

This precious girl loved bubbles, acrobatics, swimming through the snow, running through sprinklers, indulging in special treats, and of course, her humans. 🩷 She lived life with so much s***k and brought so much joy to the people lucky enough to know and love her.

And I was one of the lucky ones. 🥹

I’m blessed beyond words to have been one of Swishey Sue’s “aunties” and to love her as deeply as I do.

At an incredible 16½ years old, our beautiful Swishey Sue has gained her angel wings. 🕊️

Here are just a few of my favorite photos of this beautiful girl throughout our years together. Each one holds a memory I’ll treasure forever. 🤍

You were so very loved, sweet girl. Thank you for all of the smiles, the memories, the laughs, the love, and for letting me be one of your people.

There’s so much more to chickens than their eggs. 🐣🐔🤍

This little lady happens to be one of my Safe Haven clients! She’s part of a flock of more than 30 chickens that I have the pleasure of watching over. ☺️

As more of these feathered friends find their way onto my pet care schedule, I thought it would be fun to share just a few of the MANY reasons chickens are so fascinating!

🐛 They’re natural pest control! Chickens happily snack on some of the creepy crawlies we’d rather NOT have around, including ticks, mosquitos, flies, beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, ants, grubs and even small spiders.

🧠 They’re pretty darn smart! Chickens can recognize familiar faces, learn routines and remember their favorite humans.

🐣 Mama hens talk to their babies before they hatch! Even sweeter, the chicks can actually peep back from inside their eggs.

🌈 They see a world we can’t! Chickens can see more colors than humans, including ultraviolet light that’s completely invisible to us.

💕 They have friendships AND a social hierarchy! Chickens form bonds with their flockmates and can have preferred companions. They also establish their own social ranking, which is where the term “pecking order” comes from!

☀️ They love a good spa day! Sunbathing and dust baths are two of their favorite ways to relax while also helping care for their feathers.

🗣️ They have their own language! Chickens use dozens of different vocalizations to communicate about food, danger, their chicks and what’s happening around them.

🦖 They’re basically modern-day dinosaurs! Chickens, like all birds, are living descendants of theropod dinosaurs. Suddenly those little feet make a lot more sense. 😂

And yes… chicken sitting is absolutely a thing! These feathered friends need fresh food and water, a clean and secure environment, daily wellness checks, safe coop routines and someone keeping an eye out for any subtle changes while their humans are away.

Smart, social, quirky and absolutely FULL of personality. There’s a whole lot to love about these feathered family members! ☺️

These two are just HAPPY. Happy faces, happy tails, happy hearts… and being around them makes it pretty hard not to feel the same way.

Needless to say, becoming BFFs didn’t take us very long. ☺️
