We've gotten a lot of questions about just what exactly do we do here....

Well, most days we still train horses. We work with classical Dressage principles to put a solid foundation on horses of all types and disciplines. We prepare working western, ranch, all around, western and traditional dressage horses for competition. Jennifer has a strong background in working western and dressage, and Kari shines in the all around events as well as western dressage. We only take on a select number of full time training horses, and right now we're full with a waiting list.

We are raising a talented group of prospects. We have invested in the highest quality mares and breedings to exceptional, proven stallions. We are excited to bring up the next generation of well rounded horses for future students and competitors.

We teach. A lot. Western Dressage, Dressage, Working Western and Ranch, All Around, Sport Horse, and Showmanship. Youth, Adult, Beginner, or Advanced. General Horsemanship. Problem Solving. If in doubt, just ask. If what you need is outside our ability, we can help find the right professional to work with you.

No, we don't only work with show horses. Trail horses, family horses, green horses, and general problem solving are where we spend most of our time. Most of our students truly just want to be better riders.

Likewise, no, you do not have to show to ride with us. Showing is only one aspect of our program. Education is our passion.
Yes we work with absolute beginners. We work with riders as young as 3 years old with our Pony Pals program. We love beginner adults. We have kind, patient lesson horses for all abilities.

And yes, we can accommodate by appointment trailer-in lessons on your horse. We've got both indoor and outdoor arenas so we can teach in most all weather. Lessons are often booked out about 3 weeks.

Additionally yes, LongShot Farm boards horses for the public and you are welcome to take lessons with us on your own horse. There is a waiting list for both pasture and stall board at this time.

Yes, we still offer Ladies' Night (guys, you're welcome too), on one of our school horses or bring your own. Message us if you are interested in joining us!

Yes, you can organize your own group lesson with us. Groups are by appointment and we are happy to welcome you and your friends. On our experienced lesson horses or again you're welcome to bring your own. Contact us directly for availability and information.

Yes, we still have Youth group lessons. Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. English, Western, and Dressage. Our Young Riders Saddle Club meets during the school year to give our youngest students more in depth horse time between lessons.

In addition to lessons, we offer many opportunities for Teens. Qualified teens are invited to be a part of our After School Program to learn more about caring for our amazing herd. We offer Apprenticeships for those who are serious about going into equine and agriculture professions. Select teens are also invited to be a part of our Young Horse Development Program.

No, there is no "open arena time" here. Facility use is limited to our boarders and lesson students.

Yes, we still teach clinics. Working Western, Western Dressage, Dressage, Horsemanship and Equitation, and Kari is a Showmanship guru. Don't hesitate to reach out if you're interested in hosting a clinic! Now is not too soon to book for next year.

No, we no longer travel for off site lessons outside of clinic days. Our commitments here at home take priority. Our trailer-in lesson policy makes it easy for students to bring their horses to us. Contact us for an appointment.

And yes, we offer many opportunities to show with us. The LSF Show Team is made up of horse owners with horses in training, boarders and trailer-in students with their own horses who take lessons with us, lesson students who have full or part leases on our very experienced school horses, and the Teenybopper sponsored riders. We coach, teach, and we still show. Yes, we can show and help season your horse in training with us. When showing is a next logical step in your journey, we are here to help guide you through it.

Mostly, we work hard. We are constantly striving for improvements in our program. Along with an amazing team of professionals, we support the best school horses we can in the very best ways we know how. We continue to ask questions, re-evaluate, re-educate, and sometime flat out re-invent ourselves as we continue to grow our own horsemanship. So we can help you grow yours.

So I guess in answer to what do we do here... we do as much as we can... to make education and high quality horsemanship available... to as many as we can. We have many, many options for involvement for all ages and abilities and interests. We would love to welcome you to our Team. If there's anything we can help you with, please do not hesitate to ask!

Jennifer

This!!

Maybe I've been in this business too long, or maybe I've grown a little cynical over the years, but I have to say this; quit trying to be friends with your badly mannered horses. Quit trying to work out a relationship with a four footed partner who doesn't respect you. It really doesn't take much effort on your part to nip bad behavior in the bud, you just have to do it. Just like that kid you see having a melt down in the supermarket...he really isn't borderline autistic, misunderstood or poorly treated, he's just a brat, and the only dose of "ritalin" that he needs is a swat in the britches.

So, there's that. Reason #1 why I didn't have kids. 🤷

Back to your crowhopping, pulling back, pushy, hard to catch, unhalter broke, twelve hundred pound, four footed toddler that you want your trainer to whisper gently into good manners. Well folks, it doesn't (hardly ever) work that way. Have you ever hung around and watched a herd of horses? Well I do, all the time, and dam straight, there is a hierarchy and it's a tough one. The lines are drawn, and held, with no doubts as to who the boss is.

So here, in my world, there too is a hierarchy. It's pretty black and white, and new horses figure it out very quickly because it makes sense. They know where they stand all the time.

I've been training horses all my life and it's how I've learned to do things that creates a content and gentle herd which moves toward me when they see me approach, not away. You see, I've learned to judge my own performance by the way the horses react to my presence. I don't over think how I treat them when they are misbehaving. I don't let my conscience tell me I shouldn't have driven that one back because he pushed into my space, or I should have looked the other way when that one kicked his tail lightly as I passed behind him. Everything horses do around you, means something. It might not mean anything to you, but it does to them. So pay attention and don't let the bleeding heart, live-in-peace-with-all-Gods-creatures group that spout off on the internet these days judging honest to God horse trainers who are actually making a living working horses, get you doubting what you already know. When you are dealing with other people's 1200 pound problems, you can get hurt in a second. One second can change your life. All because somebody in that horse's world didn't have the know how, or the balls, to be a boss before they were a "friend."

Training horses isn't like Snow White sitting in the woods with little birdies perching on her, and wild forest animals hanging about. It's a tough job, and a grind, and sometimes it's learning huge life lessons from one misunderstood head toss to the next snort, in the space of a stride. So the simplest way you can make your horse trainer's life easier? Safer? Learn when it's ok to swat your toddler in the britches. šŸ˜

Have a good day folks. 😊

I heard a friend say the other dayā€¦ā€My 12 year old self would never have believed this!ā€

This was in reference to a major occurrence that had recently taken place in both her life and career. Something that I believed she had dreamed about…somewhere and sometime, but maybe not quite now.

I resonated with her statement as so many times in my lifetime, I had felt and thought the very same thing. I had also learned throughout my lifetime, that most often than not, these major occurrences in life present themselves with opportunity when we least expect it and/or when we feel we’re not quite ready for it.

It took me back to a time when life was easy (around 10 years old šŸ˜…)and all I cared about was summer vacation from school, so I could hang out with my friends and family and once in a great while, get to ride their horses and ponies with them. I knew I always loved animals…all animals, but especially horses and dogs. In fact, I apparently made the self proclaimed prophecy to my mom at age 5 that when I grew up, I wasn’t going to have kids, only dogs! Mom didn’t give it much thought til years later when she realized she was only going to get grand-pups, grand-cats and grand-horses from me! Pretty sure the biggest highlight of my youth was getting my first horse at age 13, (my sis got hers a couple years after). Our horses were made possible largely due to our dad’s shared love of horses. He grew up driving his brothers’ draft horses and when were growing up, many weekends were spent watching our uncles compete in the WI Horse Pulling Assn competitions. But we wanted to ride…and ride we did!! We’d easily put 5-10 miles on round trip rides on long summer days. Through the help of friends and a borrowed horse, I was able to compete in High School rodeo my sophomore year and we got to go to a few local shows. After graduation, I spent two weeks in Blanchardville, WI at the Art & Carolyn Adams School of Horsemanship. That seemed to start my love for learning anything equine!

With marriage came new opportunities for me to learn to drive everything diesel and raise our beloved Red Angus cattle. My husband got into horses as well and of course, they tied right in along with raising cattle. The county even put in a cattle crossing sign for us on the road that seperated our pastures so we could use our horses to drive the cattle down the road! During those years, he’d take a downhill ski trip with longtime friends in winter and in summer, I’d go to horsemanship clinics or seminars by folks like Lee Smith, Dave Ellis or Dr Robert Miller. Later, I’d attend the UWRF summer horse science programs led by the great man himself, Larry Kasten and often his buddy, the legendary Jack Brainard. In later years, my mentor was Dennis Auslam of Bridle Up Horsemanship in Morton,MN.

Life is constantly changing and evolving for many of us and full of ups and downs.

Enter the year 2019 and once again, new opportunities and beginnings with the birth of Red Rock Stables here in Eau Claire, WI.
Nervous & anxious worries were replaced quickly by mostly welcoming & receptive area horsepeople. We received boarders even before we were quite ready and some of them still have horses in the barn and in the pastures & paddocks! The people and their families, the clients and their horses, the young helpers & barn staff, the fellow equine professionals, the hay and shavings suppliers, the wonderful & supporting neighbors and friends…you’re all so engraved in my heart. 🄰 There memories made here that like others throughout my life are some of my favorites of my lifetime and will last forever!! The faith and trust I’ve been shown in providing a safe home and environment for equine loved ones means the world to me. But as you may or may not know yet…it is time for me to move on and let somebody else at the helm of owning and running and running this incredible property!!

So earlier, I was mentioning some of the equine professionals that I had the honor of learning from over the decades. My most recent (two plus years to be exact), has been a young lady who after I had taken a few lessons from her myself, knew she’d be an excellent addition to work out of our barn here with her strong knowledgeable background and equine education as well as her diversity in teaching different disciplines to adults and children alike, from beginner to advanced. Most will recognize the name and know I’m speaking of Jennifer Bull! Along with her assistant Kari Wegenke and Jennifer’s incredible herd of talented lesson horses, they have been building an impressive following and clientele and will continue to do so here for a long time to come I’m sure!!

So please join me in saying a HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS TO JENNIFER BULL on her recent purchase of the property formerly known as Red Rock Stables!!

That friend who recently made the statementā€¦ā€œMy 12 year old self would never have believed thisā€, is none other than Jennifer and when I heard that…I just knew that this was meant to be and I couldn’t be any happier for her!! I’m excited to see the plans she has in store for her LONGSHOT FARM equine facility in the future and would like to personally wish her the best of luck!!

I’d also like to thank again ALL of the people, my family & friends, clients, neighbors and of course, my fellow equine professionals in the area that have become friends and have helped in any way and supported us (me) in the operation of Red Rock Stables! I truly couldn’t have done it without you all!! Too many to list everyone by name, but a special shout out to Jes Myren of Blue Barn Stables, Taliah Danzinger of Verity Farms, Sharlyn Fellenz Harnisch of Mytalisha’s Dream Riding Center, along with Erin Barrett Swanson of Autumn Wood Farm and Samantha Henchen of Henchen's Horse Haven LLC! You’re all supported right back!! Thx for making this old cowgirl feel welcomed!! Hope to ride with some of ya this coming year!!! 🤠🄰

Congrats again to LongShot Farm & Jennifer Bull and Kari Wegenke!!!
