I really strained my back moving furniture on Monday, so saddling a horse, especially PJ has been brutal. 😭
He got more ground driving today; which I personally don’t think you can overdo if done well. I wanted to show the gear I use and why.
First picture is the bit (I start green horses in a rope halter or side pull but PJ knows how to carry a bit). I prefer a full cheek snaffle that is rubber because ground driving is more ‘handsy’ since you’re limited somewhat on other aides. You can also see the driving lines behind it.
The second picture is the surcingle. I usually run my lines through the lower ring, which has the side reins attached. While running the lines through the higher rings would mimic a more natural riding hand position, I get annoyed when the outside line comes over the horses back. I like to use the outside line to control the rib and haunches better. Also, I can’t remember the last time I used side reins, but I sure don’t mind them flopping around. 😊

So, training horses the way I do has always taken more time. I feed, clean, tack, and ride them all myself. This, I believe, is a benefit to my clients and their horses. I know if they’re eating, drinking, pooping; if they’re sore or just in a bad mood. What’s different from when I was in my twenties is the social media bit. The additional time to take videos and post them. I don’t want to, or forget to set up my recording device, forget to press record, the editing to make it short, and then post 😅
So my goal is to be better about sticking to my “Work on it Wednesdays”! I truly have a passion for helping people! So watch, starting next week, for tips and tricks to help you with things that maybe are tough; and PLEASE ask questions and offer ideas!

Thanks to my wonderful hubby and a great neighbor with equipment, we were able to get our massive, heavy tree in the ground for another tie post, and a better, more permanent rope gate to compliment the trail corner. 😅

I didn’t think I’d need to break out the winter blankets again, but here we are with fog, drizzle, snow, and a crisp 31 degrees this morning. I won’t complain about the moisture; it’s just Colorado being Colorado. Did make for some fire breathing dragons today 🔥🐎

He is solid on his headset! What a gem. He just needs to understand that the lope doesn’t have to be all or nothing. 😆

PJ 🎖️Has a lot to say about getting back to work.

An active rest day for this good boy. I love that he’s starting to carry himself in frame even while free longeing now 🤩 Then he got to take a look at a new log we got to add another tie pole at the arena, followed by a roll in the sand.
