My training mindset is simple: don’t create the conditions for escalation, and you remove a lot of the “problems” people think they need to fix. So much of dog training isn’t about correcting behavior after it happens, it’s about preventing it from being rehearsed in the first place. That means reading body language instead of ignoring it. Giving space instead of pushing through thresholds. Avoiding direct pressure, staring, or flooding situations. Letting dogs process instead of forcing compliance. Comfort isn’t optional in learning, it’s the foundation. When we don’t start the stress, we don’t get the shutdown, the reactivity, or the escalation. Calm environments create clearer communication.
