Thank you to everyone who donated towards Elvis’ care, he is back with his mom and staying with her at work so that she can keep a close eye on him ❤️
When Elvis was found by his mom in June we immediately got him in to El Campo Animal Hospital for an evaluation, as he had various puncture wounds, shredded ears, and wasn’t moving/eating as well as we would’ve liked. He was high heartworm positive & anemic then, and Tuesday was diagnosed with heartworm disease and a murmur. Elvis had a complete health panel ran, and his blood work showed that he was still anemic (which we predicted due to the large amount of blood he was losing in his urine) and high levels of liver enzymes. His urine analysis showed the large amount of blood as well as crystals, all of this indicating his body is battling some type of infection. Thankfully, his x-rays cleared him of any possible tumors. We believe his recent change in condition is the result of one of two things, his heartworm disease or Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia -which is when the immune system begins attacking/destroying platelets instead of protecting the body. This can be caused by a variety of reasons, especially since he was in such poor shape once found, one can only imagine his previous living conditions. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing how long he has been suffering from either, as the heartworm disease definitely takes it affects on the body, and this immune disease could have been lurking the entire time while with us.
Both the heartworm disease and the immune disease are treated the same way, however if he is not better within the week, we know it is the immune disease attacking his body. He was given a shot to help boost his recovery and sent home with two medications in hopes to get his body back on track. He did eat his entire bowl of dog food and is able to walk himself to the grass to go potty, both of which he was unwilling/unable to do Tuesday, so we are hopeful this is a sign we are going in the right direction 🥳
Elvis will be returning to the vets to rerun his bloodwork to ensure he is doing better and that there are no surprises! Please consider donating towards his bill so that we can keep our grumpy grandpa healthy & happy! 🥰
