One of the cutest yet nerve wracking rescues I’ve done was just recently. Fellow Edwardsville resident Jenn Mason, another resident, and myself and taken notice that several groundhogs were roaming out in the open, but no parent was present. After surveillance and consultation with Treehouse Wildlife Center, it was decided to relocate them to the Wildlife Center as more people became curious, the groundhogs were lethargic, and vehicle traffic was not slowing even after placing a few simple safety cones out.
2 were captured easily using a net. One made a slight run for it when I moved for him, but after some detective work, a 4th was found…and was not interested in coming with his family. I had been prepared for this by Treehouse and blocked 2 holes, started with another only to realize it’s too big to easily block! It’s a known fox den, which is surprising they were there instead of foxes. Fortunately the 4th came out after some patient work and off they went to Treehouse!
** PLEASE ** Do NOT attempt trapping or relocating wildlife without consukting with a wildlife specialist!
