What Iโ€™ve Learned from Loving a New Dog While Grieving Another

This is a fantastic article. ๐Ÿ’›

Last year, Annette McGivney lost her beloved yellow Lab, Sunny, and was overwhelmed by sadness. Since then sheโ€™s built a new life with a challenging rescue dog, and sheโ€™s learned a lot about the healing power of human and animal bonds.

Please join me in welcoming to the Compassion 4 Paws family, our newest Care Coordinator, Hannah Renbarger! We are SO excited to have Hannah on our team. Here's a bit more about Hannah!

๐Ÿ˜ป

I was born and raised in Florida and called Seattle my home in 2007. I have been in the veterinary industry since 2004, mostly in general practice. After the losses of my own pets, I realized how important the comfort and dignity of our furry family's last days really are, and it quickly became a passion of mine; to help others in their pets last days.

My husband, Jacob, and I are rabid Sounders fans. We share our home with 2 lovely lady cats, Domino & Sparta, and a rambunctious little man-cat, Grover. In my free time, I enjoy sewing, jigsaw puzzles, and naps. Go Sounders!

Thank you International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care for sharing this. The analogy describes grief so well. ๐Ÿ˜ž๐Ÿ’”

Grief is Like Carrying a Stone in Your Pocket
โ€œThe best way I can describe grief as the years go by is to say itโ€™s similar to carrying a stone in your pocket.
When you walk, the stone brushes against your skin. You feel it. You always feel it. But depending on the way you stand or the way your body moves, the smooth edges might barely graze your body.
Sometimes you lean the wrong way or you turn too quickly and a sharp edge pokes you. Your eyes water and you rub your wound but you have to keep going because not everyone knows about your stone, or if they do, they donโ€™t realize it can still bring this much pain.
There are days you are simply happy now, smiling comes easy and you laugh without thinking. You slap your leg during that laughter and you feel your stone and arenโ€™t sure whether you should be laughing still. The stone still hurts.
Once in a while you canโ€™t take your hand off that stone. You run it over your fingers and roll it in your palm and are so preoccupied by its weight, you forget things like your car keys and home address. You try to leave it alone but you just canโ€™t. You want to take a nap but itโ€™s been so many years since youโ€™ve called in โ€œsadโ€ youโ€™re not sure anyone would understand anymore or if they ever did.
But most days you can take your hand in and out of your pocket, feel your stone and even smile at its unwavering presence. Youโ€™ve accepted this stone as your own, crossing your hands over it, saying โ€œmineโ€ as children do.
You rest more peacefully than you once did, youโ€™ve learned to move forward the best you can. Some days you want to show the world what a beautiful memory youโ€™re holding. But most days you twirl it through your fingers, smile and look to the sky. You squeeze your hands together and hope you are living in a way that honors the missing piece you carry, until your arms are full again.โ€

If you were lucky enough to share your life with a dog, especially a โ€˜soulmate dogโ€™ who has passed or is nearing the end of life, then you also have the flip-side of such a strong relationship: grief. Compassion 4 Paws was wonderful in helping me let my baby boy Max cross the rainbow ๐ŸŒˆ bridge last week. I'm completely heartbroken, but having them help me was such a blessing. Dr.Kelly, Dr.Nicole, Dr.Sara, Tasha and Eliza ๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ’œthank you so much for everything you did!๐Ÿ’œ
Thank you Dr. Allison Edwards for your compassion and quick service on a Sunday. Our Maggie deserved a calm beautiful surrounding and you were great. Thank you.
Thank you Dr. Sara for all your love and care to help my sweet Tiny Man go to a place free from discomfort and pain. We will always be grateful for you and Compassion 4 Paws. โค๏ธ
Long Story Short: If you are already facing the extremely difficult decision to peacefully put your puppy-kid to rest, Compassion 4 Paws is amazing and will be the best decision during this awful time. Full Review: My beloved vet and I had been discussing letting my babydog go for months, and I chose Compassion 4 Paws at her suggestion once I confirmed it was time. I adopted my โ€œfirst-bornโ€ at the age of 9 weeks, and she was 15.5+ years old when it was time to let her go, so I wanted to make sure she was sent off as peacefully and comfortably as possible. They are aptly named, as the Care Coordinators showed nothing but compassion from start to finish. I primarily interacted with Shawnee, and she made everything clear and easy for me, and never made me feel like a nuisance with my 1,000 questions. I had never met Dr. Tessa before the procedure, but you would have thought she, my dog and I all had a loving relationship for years with the way we interacted. Dr. Tessa gave me exactly what I needed during an incredibly sad time, treating us and our home with the utmost respect and kindness. I paid for an extra clay paw print, and gave very specific instructions on how to engrave my petsโ€™ unique name, and there were no hiccups with either request. I was told it would take 10-14 days to receive the ashes back from the private cremation, but I received them in 6 days, and was given a call by Shawnee the next day to make sure my vet reached out for pick-up. I couldnโ€™t have asked for a better send off for my four-legged soulmate, even given the extra considerations due to the pandemic. I highly recommend. Picture Description from Left to Right: Sympathy card received after the procedure, photo of my dog in a frame that I put together, box of ashes from Compassion 4 Paws with the special engraving, claw paw print from Dr. Tessa framed with two photos of my late puppy-kid.
Our dearest boy O'Malley left us yesterday, and Dr. Sara was just wonderful. He drifted away peacefully at his favorite place at home, surrounded by people who loved him. It is a tremendously devastating time for us, but there is also much calmness and comfort because of Dr. Sara and Compassion 4 Paws. Thank you very much for what you do.
Can you tell me if any of you have references you might be able to provide for a similar service in the Walla Walla area? Or maybe a referral to a compassionate vet that you may know, who would be willing to provide the same type of care you provide for end of life. I moved to the eastern side since I used your services, several years ago when I lost my MacKenzie to CHF. My oldest Bulldog is now 13.1 doing very well, but I would like to get some plans in order. We lost one a couple of years ago here in Walla Walla, she was 12 1/2 yrs and it wasn't the best experience with our vet clinic.
Thank you Dr. Allison & Team for the timely response to my need to help end my Lillyโ€™s suffering. You and your Team responded with such compassion, kindness, caring and genuine professionalism that helped me to get through this painful experience. I am forever grateful and will never forget you. Our tribute to our Lilly.
From Dr. Maia's initial visit to Dr. Audrey's compassionate passing visit, I cannot recommend Compassion 4 Paws highly enough. Both doctor's visits were so very caring and nothing was more important to them than our pet's comfort and our peace of mind during this very difficult time. Kaeto, our 6 year old Alaskan Malamute, had succumbed to osteosarcoma and his passing after such an horrible illness was made more bearable thanks to these incredible ladies.
Thank you, Dr Audrey for your compassion in helping us say Goodbye to our lovely 19 year old kitty, Soleil. We believe she felt loved until her final breath.
Miss Rio, so hard to believe it has been a year since we said good bye. So grateful to Dr. Sara for making a horrible day more bearable.
Today was a rough one, we had to say goodbye to a member of our family, Lucky๐Ÿ˜“. She came to us when my mom passed nearly 7 years ago. She would fiercely protect our home and family, and love us even more. You will be missed Lucky. A big thx to Compassion 4 Paws
I want to thank Dr Audrey for helping our Odin cross the rainbow bridge today. Our hearts are hurting but we really appreciate the love and care you showed Odin in his last moments ๐Ÿ’™
