How to resolve many horse and rider issues

Head Tossing, pulling against the reins, nervousness, stiffness, teeth grinding, mouth gaping, running through your hands, lack of forward movement, and the list goes on. They are all symptoms of physical and emotional stress of not only the horse but possibly the rider as well. However, I would put them all under the root cause of fear. With this in mind, one must be compassionate and understanding with the horse as well as with oneself. The ultimate intention should be training for the good of the horse. If one is true to that intention, it is possible to develop a loving relationship with this amazing creature.

The Alpha and the Omega (the Beginning and the End)

Aside from being compassionate and understanding with the horse, how should one proceed to resolve common issues that may arise during training? The mystery can be found in one movement that the well-known classical dressage master, Francois de la Gueriniere called “the alpha and omega of all exercises.” He considered the shoulder-in as the foundation and the culmination of correct training – the exercise from which all others derive and to which they return.” In its totality the shoulder-in movement is the beginning and the end.

I have trained hundreds of horses of many different breeds and various disciplines and all have learned the shoulder-in. I do not consider a horse trained until they have correctly mastered the shoulder-in as I know the wealth of benefits that comes from this movement. The shoulder-in is not a goal for the sake of the movement but a goal for the good of the horse.

The mystery of the shoulder-in will be explored during discussion and a demonstration of the process given by Linda Bertschinger on April 18th at Classicus Farm in Edinburg starting at 2 in the afternoon. The fee per person will be $40.

Retraining an OTTB
Review

We brought our 9 year old OTTB to Linda for training. There is no other way to say it, he was pretty much a mess. Picture a horse trotting around holding his head and neck to one side, with super long legs that went every which way. His mind was out of control, couldn't stand still, etc). He had raced for 7 years, and had so many bad habits, along with an extreme lack of knowledge (and a splash of anxiety to boot). We had him for over a year, and although we had made some improvements with him, they were minor.

Linda had him for 4 months for her intensive training program. I cannot put into words what she has accomplished, although I will try for the sake of this review.

Apollo is a completely changed horse. He is soft, supple, content, happy, peaceful, and knowledgeable about what he is supposed to be doing. But most importantly, he is CALM. Not calm like shut down and fearful, but calm like he knows what is being asked of him, trusts his people, and is peaceful and happy. His improvement is AMAZING. Truly.

And the other piece of the pie is the human training. You can't just train the horse and hand it back to an owner who doesn't know how to maintain the training. So Linda goes to great lengths to educate and teach the human.

I cannot recommend Linda enough. If you have a horse that just needs a tune up, or maybe like in our case just really doesn't know anything, your money will be well spent here. One important thing to note- Linda is a French Classical Dressage trainer. Don't make the mistake of thinking your horse doesn't need to know this stuff just because you don't "do dressage.". These are extremely important foundational building blocks that will greatly benefit your horse in ANY discipline. If you are looking for some help with your horse, whether for private training or for one of her amazing clinics, make the call. You won't be disappointed. 💙

Quantum Classical Workshop
Oct. 18 & 19

Relaxation fior you and the horse is most important in creating positive outcomes for training. Using the principle of quantum physics, our inner world creates our outer reality, you will learn practices to help you create that relaxation and a new reality with your horse.

Classical groundwork is the key to balance and lightness. You will learn a repertoire of classical groundwork exercises that will create relaxation, suppleness, roundness, and acceptance of the bit. As always, the beacon is to maintain lightness.
