Once a month we travel south in our county to deliver pet food, dog treats and toys, puppy pads, cat litter and flea preventive to folks in Newburg, Aqualand, Issue and Cobb Island. Today we were able to help 5 dogs and 46 cats with food and supplies until we see them again in October. Thank you for your donations that make this outreach possible.

Christmas Puppy

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
With no thought of the dog filling their head.
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Knew he was cold, but didn't care about that.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Figuring the dog was free and into the trash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the luster of midday to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Santa Claus - his eyes full of tears.
He unchained the dog, once so lively and quick,
Last years Christmas present, now thin and sick.
More rapid than eagles he called the dog's name.
And the dog ran to him, despite all his pain;
" Now, DASHER! Now, DANCER! Now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! On CUPID! On, DONNER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Let's find this dog a home where he'll be loved by all"
I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year,
For Santa Claus had made one thing quite clear,
The gift of a dog is not just for the season,
We had gotten the pup for all the wrong reasons.
In our haste to think of giving the kids a gift
There was one important thing that we missed.
A dog should be family, and cared for the same!
You don't give a gift, then put it on a chain.
And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight,
" You weren't given a gift -- You were given a life!"

Hey everyone, time for an update on Boss. Boss will be two years old in a few months. I began working with Boss at Humane Society of Charles County about 3 months ago. A month later, I decided to take him on as a foster and he’s been with me since 4th of July. He is a totally different dog than the one I first met, so let me tell you a little bit about him. I also did an Embark DNA test to learn more about him. He is APBT, Chow, German Shepherd, Labrador, Staffie, and small amounts of Berger Picard (very rare French herding dog) and Rottweiler.

Boss is great with other dogs! He loves to run and play chase with them. He is non-reactive to other dogs, even strange dogs that are reacting to him. He is very composed! His absolute favorite game is tug-o-war, with dogs but especially with people.

Before his DNA test, I was guessing that he was some sort of herding dog mix based on his behaviors. After seeing the results, I have seen behaviors from every breed that showed up in his DNA test. The herding instincts/behaviors shine through in his German Shepherd and Berger Picard. I have absolutely no doubt Boss could be trained in herding and/or agility. He is very well behaved with my livestock (pigs, chickens, ducks, guineas) and can be trusted with them unsupervised. He is very athletic! The Labrador shows strong as he absolutely loves water, swimming, and fetch, as well as my favorite thing about Labradors, eagerness to please! He is very loving and affectionate with his family and trusted friends as you’d expect from an APBT and Labrador. He is a vigilant watch dog and his Chow/Rottweiler/GSD make him a stoic guardian for whomever he places under his watch.

He is great with other dogs and animals. He has shown to be good with young kids. He has good house manners and absolutely loves to cuddle. He is perfectly stable with fireworks and thunder, he’s a very level-headed dog! He has good leash manners but to be honest has not been on leash very much with me because he naturally listens so well off-leash and just wants to stay with me wherever I go. He is incredibly biddable and I have no doubt Boss could learn anything anybody wanted to teach him. He aims to please! He is muzzle trained just as an extra precaution for vet visits, although he was perfectly well behaved at his last one. He is well behaved in the car as well as in public/stores.

Boss would do best in a home with space outside for him to run and play, with people and/or other dogs to keep him company. If you’re looking for a best friend/adventure companion, Boss is your man. He will stick to you like glue and love every minute of it. Boss would absolutely thrive as a general farm dog/watch dog. If I had more space and didn’t have so many other dogs needing rescuing, I would absolutely keep this dog.

If you have any questions about Boss, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Boss is available for adoption at Humane Society of Charles County in Waldorf, MD.
