National Dog Anxiety Awareness Week 🐾

Here at Indian River Animal Clinic, we pride ourselves on being as fear-free as possible. That means we rely heavily on positive words of encouragement, lots of snacks, and medication to keep our pets as comfortable as possible throughout their entire appointment process. ❤️

If your pup is fearful or anxious for their appointment, we will try to keep them calm with a slow, less-is-more approach. If that doesn't work for your pet, we may send you home with some anti-anxiety medications to try before the next appointment to keep your pet relaxed and confident in their next visit. 🐾

Over one million pets in the United States have Heartworm Disease. While most pet owners wouldn't knowingly put their pet at risk of becoming infected with a potentially deadly disease, millions fail to protect their dog or cat from heartworm infection.

Heartworm is a life-threatening parasite that is transmitted by mosquitoes in 49 different states, it is caused by worms infesting the heart and lungs after a pet is bitten by an infected mosquito. Pets of any age and breed are susceptible to infection.

While treatment for heartworm disease is possible, it is a complicated and expensive process. In some instances the disease is fatal, particularly in cats.

There are a variety of options for the prevention of heartworm infection in dogs, including an injectable that provides protection for six months as well as monthly chewables. For cats there are topical solutions.

All of these methods are extremely effective, and when administered properly on a timely schedule, heartworm infection can be completely prevented.

It is important to realize that even pets that are exclusively indoor pets, may still be at risk due to mosquitoes entering the home.
