Why Electrolytes Matter in the Heat 🐴☀️
When temperatures rise, horses lose important minerals through sweat—especially sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. These electrolytes are essential for hydration, muscle function, and recovery. Without replacing them, horses can become dehydrated, fatigued, or more prone to heat stress.
Signs your horse may benefit from electrolytes:
✔ Heavy sweating
✔ Working in high heat or humidity
✔ Longer recovery times after exercise
✔ Reduced drinking or appetite
✔ Muscle soreness or lethargy
There are several ways to supplement:
🔹 Powder electrolytes – Easy to add to feed, but some horses may refuse them or avoid water if mixed in.
🔹 Paste electrolytes – Great for a quick boost and useful when you need to know they actually got the dose. Just watch—some horses are talented at spitting it out!
🔹 Pelleted or mash-based electrolytes (my favourite) – Often the easiest option for picky eaters and can encourage both hydration and feed intake. Replenimash and Smartpak electrolyte pellets can be purchased at Tractor Supply
We will always make sure your horse has access to clean, fresh water and salt, especially during hot weather. Electrolytes should support hydration—not replace water intake.
Every horse is different, so choose the option that works best for your horse and their workload. Some horses may need the extra support, some will not. Stay cool out there! ☀️💧
