It’s Friday night. Dad’s old truck is rolling down the road with the vent windows open on a humid summer evening. The smell of corn fields fills the air. The young pup is in the dog box making a racket while the old reliable hound is calm and saving energy for the night ahead. As we go down the road, the CB radio crackles. It’s my uncle letting us know they’re already waiting at the Catalpa woods. I’ve got an old red Nite Lite battery hanging from a belt that's three sizes too big, just like the old boots on my feet that barely fit. When we pull into the woods, you can hear the locusts buzzing and see the dust hanging in the air. The sound of collars jingling and tails smacking the inside of the dog box lets you know the most exciting part of your week is about to begin.
Dad and my uncles keep joking about each other's dogs as we walk toward the timber. Then all at once, four hounds are cut loose. Every light gets shut off.
The world goes pitch black. Silent. You don't realize it yet, but you're living the moments you'll spend the rest of your life wishing you could experience one more time. Then a hound opens in the darkness.
And the night comes alive.

You may see just another deer picture. I see the first family picture we all had together. My wife was pregnant with our youngest son. My mom and dad were standing behind the camera. This was a moment I had been working toward for almost a year. That night was the third time I had this buck within 10 yards in three different locations. My grandfather had recently passed away. The strength, perseverance, and consistency he taught me helped lead me to this moment. He was always the type of man who thought first, reacted second, and led by example. Those lessons stayed with me long after he was gone. To some, it's just a deer. To me, it's a culmination of hard work, personal growth, perseverance, and a reminder of the people who helped shape who I am. Years from now, I won't remember every detail about this hunt. What I'll remember is my family standing there together, my parents behind the camera, my wife carrying our youngest son, and a moment that represented far more than a set of antlers ever could.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make with young dogs is expecting results on their timeline instead of the dog's timeline. A puppy that isn't running and treeing at 6 months old isn't necessarily behind. More often than not, they're just being a puppy. The hardest part of training isn't teaching a dog. It's having the patience to let one develop. In this week's Puppy Training Series on Patreon, I break down why patience is one of the most important tools a trainer has, and how unrealistic expectations ruin more good dogs than bad genetics ever will.
If you're raising a pup right now and want to avoid the mistakes that set so many young dogs back, this episode is for you.

Last night we did one of my favorite things to do this time of year as summer begins to heat up. We loaded up the kids, grabbed the camera, and went looking for wildlife. The kids enjoyed some snacks and a great view of the scenery we're blessed to live in every day. We spotted deer feeding in the fields, a family of raccoons making their evening rounds, and plenty of other sights that remind me why I love raising my family in the country. Sometimes the best adventures don't require a destination, just a little time together and an appreciation for the world around you.

Some nights go exactly as planned. Most don't. That's what makes the stories worth telling. The woods don't care how much experience you have, they always find a way to teach you something.

Doing what I do, I receive thousands of comments and messages from dog owners every week. Occasionally I come across one that perfectly illustrates a problem I've been talking about for years.
"It's not that they breed to get the best stud dog because they think it will produce one of the best. We do it because those pups are very easy to sell at a very high price. My family has been doing it for years and money is a big part of the reason they breed to those dogs."

Unfortunately, not every breeding decision is made with the future of the dogs in mind. Too often people see a popular name on a pedigree, assume it guarantees quality, and market puppies accordingly. The focus becomes what the pups will sell for instead of whether the cross actually improves the next generation. That is exactly why I use my l platform to educate people. I don't want to see honest, hardworking people spend their hard earned money based on marketing, hype, or a name printed on a piece of paper. I want them to make informed decisions and understand what they're actually getting. The future of hunting with dogs depends on breeders, owners, and buyers valuing quality, honesty, and proven ability above popularity and profit. A pedigree can tell part of the story. The dogs themselves should tell the rest.
