Floyd (L) and Nico (R) knew each other in their working lives. Now they share a stall grate and fence line out in the field. Perhaps swapping stories about “the good old days” but just as likely talking about how awesome their lives are now ❤️🐴❤️

Today we said “goodbye for now” to a very special resident at North Star Farm.

Lacey was the OG, the red mare queen, the first retiree we welcomed here when we opened our doors in July 2021.

Lacey was the best kind of chestnut mare; partial to her people, fiery when necessary, gentle with little humans and dogs, and always ready for a minty snack (sugar free, of course).

During her time with us, she battled various health issues that come with aging horses. These finally culminated in an insurmountable colic. Together with her loving, dedicated owners Megan Coogan Clegg and Caitlin Cooper, and stellar veterinary care from Southern Equine Service the decision was made to let her peacefully enter the next realm - free from pain and worry.

Lacey, Megan and Caitlin, it was the privilege of our existence here at North Star Farm to have you in our life. Thank you for always trusting us with your hearts.

Good girl Lacey. Until we meet again 🌹🕊️🤍

We’ve had a bit of instant summer this week, a sneak peek at what’s coming. Nico is enjoying a bite of evening grass as an appetizer then back in front of the fan until after sunset. Nighttime turnout starts in a few short weeks! ❤️🐴❤️

One of the things I love most about these retired horses is how much they all seem to love the littlest generation of horse girls. They are so soft and gentle with her they just seem to know she brings only love and joy. And treats…

This picture showed up in my OTD photo vault from 2019. Other than a change in neighborhoods and the snow everything else is the same. Frigid temps (even by MA standards), same hat, same coat… but the retirees are all bundled up, munching on hay, and enjoying a bit of sunshine!

Horses will definitely be in today after flooding rains and now high winds. Safety first!

I’m very grateful to the team at Kingsway Farm for the trust they’ve placed in the care and attention horses receive here. We are eagerly awaiting Nico’s arrival later today and can’t wait for him to explore his large porch and pasture, be re-acquainted with some old friends, and live the life every horse deserves.

Thank you Kristie Callahan Gill for allowing me to care for Peach. She will always hold a special place in my heart. ❤️🐴🍑

At this retirement farm, horses get to be horses - as long as it’s safe! Today Lux and Floyd enjoyed a full body roll in the wet mud!

I’d like to send a huge THANK YOU to those horse people who instill in their young horses the ability to stand quietly for baths, farrier fly spray, etc. Please know how grateful I am that when they come here for their retirement at the end of their careers I am eternally grateful for the horses that know that these daily tasks are No Big Deal. ❤️🐎❤️

With “real feel” temps closing in on 100+ this week , all of the horses enjoy a cool shower before heading inside for the afternoon. This is Floyd, who doesn’t stand still for long… except when he’s getting drenched by the hose! ❤️🐴❤️

Happy retirement anniversary to Lacey - still the spunkiest red mare ever! ❤️🐴❤️

It’s Floof season here at North Star!

We have a menagerie here … horses, barn cats, dog, laying hens…. And of course we have a varied wild bird population. Important because they eat BUGS! This little floof is the sole survivor of his clutch - circle of life and all that. I normally don’t intervene but this little one has spent 2 nights in the barn attic in a trug full of hay and shavings. Mom is encouraging flight, so we’ve graduated to a smaller bucket on a shelf in the wash stall. Mom has kept up and continues to feed and encourage flight. The cats continue to alert me to their progress so they’re otherwise occupied in the grain room for a bit. The dog so far has not caught on 😜

I know the odds are against Floof but I’m still going to cheer it on.

This is the happy face of Lacey, our oldest and longest retiree. She’s even happier than usual today because she had a visit from her owner for treats, grooming and some quality time. I believe that horses remember faces (human and equine!) and that they remember good care and a loving hand. Owner visits are encouraged and welcomed here!
