What do we actually do in the After School Program?

We Problem Solve. Horses are athletes and individuals with very individual needs. We work together to be sure they have excellent care.

We Build a Community. Teens help mentor our youngest riding students, and in turn are mentored by our veteran horsemen and women.

We Grow. The After School Program is the springboard for further opportunities including the Young Horse Development Program, Teaching Techniques and Business Management courses, and reduced fee leases.

We Collaborate. Teens are given the chance to work with our team of professionals who come to care for our horses; veterinarians, farriers, bodyworkers, and chiropractors.

We Network. The After School Program brings students together with trusted outside instructors through clinics, workshops, seminars, and offsite learning days.

We Do Life. Whatever comes our way, we work together to leave the day a little better than we found it.

If this is something you think your teen would be interested in, reach out to us for more information.

What is our After School Program?

This is a work/study program that offers a chance to be a part of the LongShot Farm Team and learn about horse care, business management, and horse and rider development. You’ll be able to see what goes into a National level training program and spend time with our World class horses. We have both indoor and outdoor arenas which allow us to operate year round. We accept a limited number of teens to this program throughout the year.

The After School Program supports our academy lesson program tracts of teaching and business management, as well as horse management and development. We tackle special projects and in depth horse care, we maintain records and appointment schedules, we collaborate with our team of equine professionals, and so much more.
Our core values of teamwork, honesty, leadership, and fairness are priority. We ask each student to sign our Code of Conduct, understanding that they represent our program in the barn and out in their community.

In addition to day to day activities, After School participants are given exclusive access to opportunities throughout the year including clinics, guest speakers, and reduced cost part time leases.

Participation in our After School Program also prepares students for further educational opportunities in our Young Horse Development Program, our Teaching Techniques Program, and Apprenticeship or Working Student positions.

Today was a horse show day. Horse shows mean a lot of different things to different people. And while we sincerely strive to improve horsemanship, I think if we got honest we might admit it's really about who we choose to spend time with.

The friends we travel with, the colleagues we catch up with, the judges we show to, the team that hosts the event, the mentors we learn from. We choose to be here.

I thought this quite a lot today as I sat through a lengthy rain delay. And almost no one left early. Nearly every single exhibitor stayed, and waited, with a willing attitude and bright outlook on an otherwise dreary day. We chose to stay.

I watched conversations develop that might not have happened on a "normal", rushed horse show day. I watched people take interest in each other, support each other, cheer for each other; maybe because we were afforded the time while we waited, or maybe because the rain made each of us just vulnerable enough that we all realized we needed a bit of support and so did those around us. We chose to make that effort.

I don't know what it was for sure, but this rainy, never ending day was absolutely beautiful. Good people being good people. Choosing to lift others up, sometimes even carry them, during the rain delays of life.

I love when horse shows bring out the best in people. It is humbling to be a tiny part of such a big, beautiful community.

Ride on!
