Canine Parvovirus ("Parvo") is a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus that attacks a dog’s intestines and immune system. Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are most at risk.

Signs to watch for:
➡️ Severe vomiting & diarrhea (often bloody)
➡️ Lethargy & loss of appetite
➡️ Fever or low body temperature

Prevention is key! Keep your pup safe with:
✅ Vaccinations (core puppy series + boosters)
✅ Avoiding high-risk areas (dog parks, etc.) until fully vaccinated
✅ Immediate vet care if symptoms appear – Parvo moves fast!

If you suspect Parvo, isolate your dog and call us or your family veterinarian immediately. Early treatment saves lives!

No one wants to think about emergencies—but being prepared could save your pet’s life! Here are 4 critical skills every pet owner should know:

🫀 CPR for Pets
Dogs: Place them on their side, compress the chest (1/3–1/2 its width) at 100–120 beats per minute.
Cats: Use one hand for chest compressions (just behind the elbows).
Give rescue breaths by closing the mouth and breathing into the nose.
🩹 Bleeding Control & Wound Care
Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or gauze.
Elevate the wound if possible (unless it’s a fracture).
Avoid tourniquets unless absolutely necessary.
🌡️ Heatstroke & Hypothermia
Heatstroke (panting, drooling, collapse): Move to shade, cool with room-temp (not ice-cold) water, and seek vet care immediately.
Hypothermia (shivering, lethargy): Warm them gradually with blankets and warm (not hot) water bottles.
⚠️ Airway Blockages (Choking)
If your pet is gagging but still breathing, let them cough it out.
If struggling to breathe, check the mouth for obstructions (careful—they may bite!).
Never blindly sweep—you could push the object deeper.

🆘 When in doubt, CALL US! Fast action + emergency vet care = the best chance for recovery!

❌Cats and Lilies don’t mix!

With Easter approaching ⚠️ Did you know that lilies (true lilies and daylilies) are FATALLY TOXIC to cats?

Keep lilies out of your home if you have cats as all parts of the lily are considered toxic…even the pollen!

‼️ Many cat owners don’t know this, so sharing this information could save a life this Easter holiday.

If your cat has been exposed to a true lily or daylily, please seek veterinary care immediately as treatment is time sensitive. 🚨

Even the friendliest dogs can snap—whether at the dog park, on walks, or even at home with their furry siblings. At Allied Veterinary ER, we treat dog-on-dog bites every week, and the most common injuries we see are to the legs and neck.

How to reduce the risk:
✔ Supervise play – Not all dogs speak the same "play language"
✔ Watch for tension – Stiff bodies, raised hackles, or intense staring can signal trouble
✔ Avoid crowding – Dog parks can get overwhelming fast
✔ Separate when needed – Even best friends need breaks

If a bite happens:
🚑 Check for wounds (even small punctures can hide serious damage)
🚑 Call us or your family vet ASAP – Bites can lead to infection or internal injury

Share this with a dog parent you know! A little awareness can prevent a painful emergency.

🐾 Be Prepared: Your Pet's First Aid Kit Could Save Their Life!

April is Pet First Aid Awareness Month, and at Allied, we believe every pet parent should be ready for life's little (and big) emergencies.

While we hope you never need it, having a well-stocked pet first aid kit can make all the difference in a crisis. Your kit should include essentials for wound care, poisoning, and sudden illnesses—because when accidents happen, quick action matters most.

🚑 Pro Tip: Store your kit somewhere easy to grab (not buried in a closet!) and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is.

📲 Already have one? Double-check that nothing’s expired!

🚨 PSA: Did Your Dog Get Into Your Edibles? We Can Help – No Judgment!

We get it—accidents happen. But if your pup snagged your cannabis edibles, it’s an emergency. Here’s why:
🐾 THC is toxic to dogs (even small amounts!)
🐾 Human-sized doses = big danger for smaller dogs
🐾 Symptoms to watch for:
Lethargy, vomiting, wobbliness
Dilated pupils, seizures, or worse

🚑 Act fast!
1️⃣ Call us or your family veterinarian ASAP
2️⃣ Note what/how much they ate
3️⃣ Skip home remedies – professional care saves lives

We’re here to help, not judge. Time matters!

Most dogs celebrate their birthdays with extra treats and belly rubs… but our favorite frequent flyer, Maggie? She kicked off her 6th birthday with an all-night escapade that you have to read to believe!

In the early hours of March 22nd, while her humans slept, Maggie pulled off her most daring heist yet—breaking into her toy bin and a stash of pet medications, including carprofen, gabapentin, Apoquel, and Dasuquin. By morning, her family was rushing her through our doors.

Dr. Brett Rabe and our emergency team jumped into action, working with Pet Poison Helpline to create a 48-hour detox plan. But here’s where the story takes a heartwarming turn…

Midway through her hospital stay, Maggie’s family turned the ER into an unexpected birthday party! 🎉 With cake, party hats, and her canine sibling Bear by her side, Maggie’s treatment turned into her birthday celebration. We’ve seen a lot in our ER, but a birthday bash? That was a first!

The best news? Maggie made a full recovery and is back home (for now 😉). The even better news? She reminded us why we love what we do—caring for pets in every moment, from the chaotic to the heartwarming.

🎂 Happy belated birthday, Maggie Mae! Maybe next year, let’s keep the celebrations outside the ER… but just in case, we’ll leave the lights on for you.

📚🐾 Dr. Campbell Inspires Future Veterinarians at Robbinsdale Spanish Immersion School!

Our very own Dr. Campbell traded his stethoscope for a storybook, sharing the magic of veterinary medicine with 130+ excited students at Robbinsdale Spanish Immersion Elementary, recently.

He brought "I Want to Be a Veterinarian" by Laura Driscoll to life, showing these young animal lovers all the incredible ways veterinarians care for creatures great and small - from emergency rooms to zoos! The timing couldn't have been more perfect as the classes just wrapped up their animal unit.

The best part? Those priceless questions! Dr. Campbell fielded everything from "What's your favorite animal?" to "What's your dog's name?" with the same patience and warmth he shows our furry patients every day.

At Allied Veterinary ER, we believe community starts young - whether we're inspiring future veterinarians or helping raise compassionate pet lovers. A huge thank you to the wonderful students and staff for this unforgettable visit!
