Orcas Animal Protection Society

Orcas Animal Protection Society Orcas APS is a 501[c][3] non-profit organization.

Our Mission: Through operating an animal shelter, we advocate for the welfare of animals in need by providing community support and compassionate care. The people and pets in our community are deeply important to us because they are the heart of what makes this a place we are proud to call home. We believe that the well-being of animals and the well-being of people are closely connected—when pets

are healthy, loved, and well cared for, our whole community thrives. Our goal is to ensure that every pet has a safe and loving home, and that every guardian has access to the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to provide the best possible care. By supporting both animals and the people who love them, we create the kind of compassionate, supportive environment where everyone—two-legged and four-legged alike—can flourish. Services Provided
* Accepting stray animals or those relinquished by an owner;
* Offering cats and dogs for adoption;
* Training volunteers for animal care tasks;
* Scanning of found animals for microchip identification;
* Feral cat testing for FIV and Feline Leukemia, as well as spaying or neutering before returning to their home territory;
* Offering lower cost spays and neuters. Services Not Provided
* Accepting any wild animals;
* Accepting gravely injured or obviously sick stray animals;
* Euthanizing animals, except if in the best interest of the animal.

Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale), also known as Meadow Saffron, can be found locally. While very beautiful, all parts of this plant are highly toxic to pets (and even humans) if ingested. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, organ failure, or be fatal for cats and dogs. It is important to note that symptoms may take hours to days to appear, which can make it harder to connect exposure with illness.

If you think your pet has eaten Autumn Crocus, don't wait for symptoms, collect plant material and seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

SPAY AND NEUTER AVAILABILITY IN OCTOBER. DON'T WAIT!

Spaying or neutering your cat or dog does more than just prevent litters. It helps protect them from certain cancers and infections, avoids pregnancy risks, and may even increase their life expectancy. Pets who are altered are often calmer, happier, and less likely to roam, spray, or show aggression.

When we choose to spay or neuter, we’re also making a difference for the whole community. Fewer strays means fewer risks of aggression, less overpopulation, and more space in shelters for pets who truly need a second chance.

At Orcas APS, we’re proud to offer on-site, low-cost spay and neuter services for San Juan County residents who income qualify. Feral cats are always free, and we loan out traps to help you safely bring them in. While we often have a waiting list, we currently have openings in October, so now is the perfect time to schedule your pet’s appointment.

You can request an appointment, check pricing, view available services, and see if you qualify right on our website: https://www.orcaspets.org/neuter.html

Together, we can create a healthier, happier community, one pet at a time.

NO ADOPTION FEE ON SELECT CATS THROUGH THE END OF SEPTEMBER.

This year, we trapped several semi-feral cats on Waldron Island as part of our community TNR efforts. While most were returned, seven of them turned out to be just too sweet to go back. With patience, love, and gentle care, they’ve blossomed into affectionate companions who now deserve the chance to become someone’s much-loved pets.

If you have a quiet home and a big heart, come meet your new best friend. These kitties are ready to trade Waldron life for the warmth of a family.

August is National Make-A-Will Month

Do you have a plan in place for your pets if something unexpected happens? No matter your age or health, it’s always a good idea to be prepared:

Keep a folder at home with veterinary records.
Outline medications and special needs.
Share your plan with Orcas APS—so if your pet ever comes into our care, we’ll know exactly who to contact. (Maybe we are part of that plan—and that’s important for us to know, too!)

We’re here to help you create peace of mind for you and safety for your pets. Call us at (360) 376-6777 to discuss your emergency plan.

This month is also a reminder that your legacy can go even further. By including Orcas APS in your estate plans, you can ensure compassionate care for animals and support for the people who love them—long into the future.

Together, we can make sure every pet has a safe tomorrow.

Happy National Dog Day!

Adoption Update: Akiko
Our sweet Akiko came by today for her second vaccine, and we were thrilled to see how well she’s doing! Her new family told us, “She’s growing like a weed,” and we couldn’t agree more.

She’s thriving in her new home, and stories like hers remind us why we do what we do. 🐾
