DAMNED IF YOU DO AND DAMNED IF YOU DON'T 💦🐕🛋️🛏️🤰🏻

Pesticide💦 exposure in and around homes raises long-term health concerns, especially for children. It has been linked to chronic conditions such as cancers, diabetes, reproductive and neurological disorders, and birth defects. These risks extend to veterinary health as well.

Spot-ons💦 like Fipronil & imidacloprid are highly toxic pesticides⚠️ that are no longer approved for use in outdoor agriculture but continue to be widely used in pet flea treatments, typically applied to the back of the pet’s neck (known as spot-ons) and used in poison baits for ants🐜 and cockroaches.

Studies show that households with pets treated for fleas and ticks may increase pesticide exposure in humans, particularly children👧, through direct contact or contaminated dust.

One study found that Fipronil can transfer from mother to unborn baby via the placenta, and exposure to fipronil’s toxic breakdown product, fipronil sulfone, during pregnancy🤰🏻 has been associated with reduced thyroid function in newborn babies as well as lower Apgar scores, a score used to test the health of a newborn.

Last week, our expert panel shared the chemical preventive options they would recommend if they had to choose just one. We also discussed how to safely integrate these treatments along with testing methods and detox protocols to keep your pet healthy and protected.

This week, we’ll explore how balancing your dog’s internal health—through the skin, liver, kidneys, gut, and immune system—can create a more flea/tick-resistant environment. You’ll learn how specific herbs and essential oils can support organ health and help naturally defend against fleas and ticks. Plus, we’ll share practical tips, recipes, and dosage guidelines for both internal and external herbal remedies.

Join our new panel of experts this Sunday on the Inside Scoop as they share expert insights on preventing flea and tick infestations while boosting your pet’s overall health.

In this episode we're covering:

Having been a veterinarian for almost 3 decades, I have seen the tide of how animals are treated change drastically. When I graduated dogs were dogs, now dogs are considered to be higher ranking than people. In our crazy world, people love their dogs more than they love their own families and they treat their dogs better than they treat other humans and I am sorry to say that we are destroying our dogs mental health because of it.

It is increasingly common to go into an exam room and have a dog that is growling at me and trying to bite and the owner is petting it telling it that it is a good dog. It is NOT being a good dog and it should not be rewarded for growling and trying to bite. It is important that we train our dogs properly and we use right language with them. Never is it ok for a dog to growl and try and bite in an exam room where nothing horrible is happening to them and feeding into that behavior does not make it better for your dog, it trains them that their fear is a good thing and it is not.

Mental disorders are exponentially increasing in our dogs and it is us owners fault. Please stop treating your dog like it is some fragile child and start treating it like it is a dog. TRAIN them and teach them commands and correct them when they are wrong and stop thinking you are going to hurt their feelings if you do. Dogs are dogs, not small humans. They need training and proper instructions or it leads to horrible anxiety issues in them and I can assure that that behavior is going to hurt your feelings way more than being an adult and training your dog to be a good dog instead of a spoiled child.

The following are a few copied excerpts from an article that I read this morning from a dog trainer. I feel like there are a good reminder for all of us on exactly what are dogs are and what they need.

"Your dog is a dog, not a human child. Constant unearned affection is a killer and creates an unhealthy addiction for both dog and owner. Your dog will love you unconditionally but will never respect you unless you give it reason to.

The most basic of basics, your dog must learn how to be still in any situation. If your dog can’t be still around any distraction, you will never have control.
Recall
Sit
Down
Walk nicely on leash
Out, meaning release anything in your mouth

You MUST have a language dedicated to your dog that your dog can learn by you being consistent and applying meaning to the words you use. Your dog MUST know what yes means, but also MUST know what NO means. If nothing comes after those words, yes equals reward for good, no equals correction for bad, your dog will never give meaning to either. Your dog’s name is not a command, or correction. NO should not be your dog’s middle name.

The training starts the second you bring the dog home."

Short hairs don't shed?

A few years ago when we featured the Dalmatian as the Purebred of Interest, we learned a couple of things that were a surprise to readers who don’t live with the breed.

One is that this single coated breed not only sheds, but sheds a lot. One owner wrote, “Dalmatians have two shedding seasons: January to June, and July to December.” Another former owner added, “We have a chair that I recently sat in wearing black slacks, and when I got up, I had short white hairs all over it, and we haven’t had a Dalmatian in 17 years!”

Another anecdote: “Heather wrote: “I once pulled a clean, sealed *empty* Tupperware container out from under the cupboard and opened it for leftovers. It had a single Dalmatian hair in it. I also once had a 101 Dalmatians character wrist watch. Somehow, a single Dal hair wormed it’s way in between the crystal and the watch face… Dalmatians shed so much one wonders how they manage to keep enough hair on their bodies in the first place.” Shed hair that’s both black and white also means that the hair will stand out on just about any color one chooses to wear.

Dalmatian hair is tenacious! The shed hair has little barbs on the end that make it difficult to remove from fabric and upholstery short of tweezer surgery. Indeed, the barbs practically weave the hair into fabric, and worse, some owners report that the hair can stick into skin like a splinter particularly when it’s stepped on with bare feet!

Sadly, rescue groups report that for owners who don’t do their homework on the breed, the shedding comes as a surprise. We heard about an active duty Army officer and his wife who returned their Dalmatian to its foster home because the dog shed too much and the hair kept getting on the officer’s uniform. They hadn’t believed what they were told, choosing instead to believe the foster mom was just a bad housekeeper.

For the right owner who did their homework, the Dalmatian is the perfect breed: Intelligent, clean, highly affectionate, and very versatile. Brushing the coat misted with water minimizes the amount of loose dog hair, and everyone is happy.
