Please be exactly like Jill, you'll make my job a lot easier. A lot of orphan wildlife actually don't make it because they are fed something that they cannot digest. Please don't love wildlife to death.

Porcupine Encounters Are More Common Than You Think

We are already seeing an increase in dogs having dangerous run-ins with porcupines and it’s something every dog owner needs to understand.

Porcupines do NOT shoot their quills. Your dog made contact… usually by getting too curious or attempting to attack. The quills are barbed, painful, and can travel deeper into the body if not handled properly.

Porcupines are not just a nighttime animal either: They can be active during the day and in New Hampshire, they are most active May through September.

If your dog gets quilled:
• Do NOT try to remove them yourself
• Quills can break, migrate, and cause serious infection
• Your dog needs immediate veterinary care

Prevention is everything:
• Keep dogs leashed, especially at dawn/dusk
• Be mindful near wooded areas, rock piles, and dens
• Check your yard before letting your dog out
• Know that curiosity can turn into an emergency in seconds

At Granite State Dog Recovery, we see first hand how quickly situations like this escalate and how painful and dangerous it can be for these dogs.

Has your dog ever been quilled? How many quills did they pull out from your dog?
How many times has your dog been quilled? We would love to hear your story to help educate other dog families out there. Thank you

They call us ugly.
They call us pests.
They say we don't belong.
But we were here first.
We raise our babies.
We keep ecosystems balanced.
We're just trying to live the life meant for us.
THE OPOSSUM:
→ Eats 5,000 ticks per season
→ Immune to most snake venom
→ Nearly impossible to get rabies
→ "Plays dead" because it's TERRIFIED of you
THE RACCOON:
→ Remembers problem solutions for 3+ years
→ Has more sensory receptors in paws than most mammals
→ Washes food to "see" it better through touch
→ Just wants to eat and raise babies
THE SKUNK:
→ Eats grubs destroying your lawn
→ Digs up yellow jacket nests (you're welcome)
→ Only sprays as absolute LAST resort
→ Stomps feet and warns you FIRST
You call the exterminator. You put out poison. You shoot them.
For WHAT?
For eating the pests you'd pay money to remove?
For existing in a neighborhood built on THEIR home?
Kindness should include all lives.
They're not beautiful to everyone. They're not always welcomed. They're not always understood.
But they're just trying to live the life meant for them.
Maybe let them.

World Animal Protection US

As the weather warms up around the country, you might be seeing more wild animals active. Don't be alarmed! Wild animals like opossums are excellent for the environment and are just trying to survive, too. 🧡

Please take time to check burn piles before lighting them. Remove branches, check for nests, and place branches back before lighting.
In springtime, a critter can move in overnight and have a litter, so it's best to check right before lighting. Same for fire pits!

Cordy's Castle Wildlife Rescue

⚠️ If you find downed squirrels 🐿

We hope everyone stayed safe during the storms last night. With weather like this, it’s common for squirrel nests to fall and babies to end up on the ground.

A few important things to remember:
• Mom squirrels usually survive storms just fine
• Mom squirrels often have backup nests and will come back for their babies

In fact, just yesterday someone contacted us and followed these steps, and the mom came back and moved her baby to safety. This is actually a very common reunification practice used by wildlife rehabbers... it’s even called a “reunion box.”

Most important:

⚠️ Babies MUST BE KEPT WARM
⚠️ DO NOT FEED the babies ANYTHING

Please follow the steps in the graphic. If you’re unsure what to do, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for guidance.

To find a permitted wildlife rehabilitator in MA, please go to https://www.mass.gov/info-details/find-a-wildlife-rehabilitator to find the one closest to you!
In other states you can go to AHNOW.ORG you can search for help by zip code or location.

The babies are already arriving at Woodland Critters, and baby wildlife season is just beginning. These tiny, fragile lives need warmth, food, and round-the-clock care, but we urgently need supplies and support to keep up with the growing number coming in. If you can help with a donation or wishlist item, you’ll be directly helping save a wild life. 🐿️💚
