Feeding live prey isn’t ā€œnaturalā€ in captivity, it’s unnecessary suffering.

In many countries, it’s illegal to feed live rats to snakes because of how cruel it is to both animals. Even if it’s legal where you live, it’s still dangerous and unethical.

Buying rats from feeder bins isn’t ā€œrescuingā€ them. It’s financially supporting the same industries that treat them like disposable products.

Choose frozen-thawed. Choose compassion. Contact a veterinarian to help you transition them to frozen-thawed, it’s possible with patience, persistence, and a proper enclosure.

šŸ€Will you join me in boycotting places that sell live animals for food? ā¤ļø

ā—ļøPSA: Just in the month of April I have seen a DOZEN of these cases. ā€œFemale snuck into the male cage, accidental pregnancyā€ -NO It’s not an accident if you own both genders, females WILL find a way to get pregnant if given the slightest opportunity.

It only takes seconds for a female to become pregnant. If you’re going to keep both genders, get them fixed unless you’re a breeder. Better yet, don’t keep both genders. Benefit of fixed rats is they can all live together, separate cages not necessary. Proper cage setups are also essential.

Releasing oops litter rats with unknown genetic background into the pet world when they are rehomed is the reason why rat rescues are flooded, the average age of rats is diminishing, and health/temperament issues are so common.

A single broken bar on a critter nation leaves a 1 inch gap females can squeeze out of. Plastic base bottoms will get chewed. Stop getting cages with 1 inch bar spacing, wild rats can also sneak into your homes and cages (wild rats are the same species and CAN impregnate fancy rats)- bar spacing should always be 1/2 inch or smaller. Wooden cages can be chewed.

Unsupervised free roam, unfixed rats, poor setups, owning both genders- ITS ALL PREVENTABLE. Please I’m begging you all, let’s be responsible pet owners.

(Separate rant another day about how pet stores misgender rats, I know that’s also a major source of oops litters)

Nearly all pet store treats are toxic to small animals! Rats can digest starch but they CANNOT digest alfalfa hay or Timothy hay. Avoid ingredients with those 2 hays, whole dried corn, oil, and sugar. I sell RAT SAFE TREATS made without sugar, oil, or harmful ingredients and bake them fresh by hand every 2 weeks. Stop supporting pet stores and their abuse of animals!

+ Rescue from an accredited Rescue! There’s no such thing as rescuing from a pet store if you give them money for the animal. Mainely Rat Rescue is local here in New England!

Why rescue?
Because some animals wait for months and often years for their adopter to find them. They have waited just for you!!
Hope is always there and in the meantime rescuers care for the animals, knowing that it is their duty as humans to protect these innocent creatures.
Their care continues behind the scenes every day

Did you knowā“
Fancy rats are the same species as wild Norway rats (also called Brown Rats or Rattus norvegicus)! They’ve been domesticated for a few hundred years. Originally, they were bred for blood sports like rat-baiting, but over the past 100 years, breeding has shifted toward companionship and pet keeping.

Fancy rats have been selectively bred for friendly temperaments and diverse traits like Dumbo, Dwarf, Rex, Harley, and Hairless, to name a few. Despite their different appearances, there are no separate ā€œbreedsā€ of rats. Any domesticated rat is considered a Fancy Rat, scientifically known as Rattus norvegicus domestica. These different appearances are called varieties.

There are two major breeding societies that recognize these varieties and host rat shows. In the U.S., we have AFRMA, which holds shows in California! Check out AFRMA.org to learn more and identify your rat’s variety.

Reservations for April litters are *closed* unless adopters fall through at pickups. I was able to clear most of the male list, and help almost 1/2 the female list. 4 remain on male waitlist, 17 on list for females. I’ll post this soon to make sure I didn’t miss anyone.

Next round will be for my May litters which are due in the next 1-2 weeks. I paired 3 females so I should be able to help most/everyone currently on the remaining list.

I am *maybe* planning a road trip to North Carolina end of May where I am making a stop in New Jersey for some adopters. If anyone wants to get in on this delivery please let me know. If I don’t go in May it will be sometime else this year if all goes well.
(Keep in mind my delivery fee is .75 per mile from Bedford, MA)
