I have no idea how long it will take for me to get to you as many people skip or ghost me, adopt 3-4 last minute when they originally wanted 2, I can’t predict how many babies will be born or pass temperament testing… BUT I do have a lot of males adoptable this month and 4 adoptable females. I should have 2 pregnant moms if everything goes well to be adoptable the first week of October for late-September reservations. Average wait the last round of adopers waited was 3 months.
I get on average 11-13 babies per litter and breed 1-3 females at a time every 6 weeks. On average, 50% of waitlist skip or ghost me.
BEING OPEN TO ADULTS SKIP WAITLIST lmk if you’re open to that.

Adopters: Please have your cage setup when I text you to reserve your babies (ideally send it before it’s your turn in case I don’t approve).
Remember you have a 24 hours from the moment I text you to:
-reserve your rats
-get cage setup approved
-sign contract
-and pay deposit
….or you *will be skipped*

Our rats tested free of RBF and other fatal zoonotic diseases every year we’ve been open (see results in comments). As a breeder, it is so important to health test at least yearly or when getting new stock, and to maintain good quarantine, hygiene, and husbandry.
As an adopter, it’s important to be educated on the risks of owning any animal and to support sources of rats that are dedicated to reduce those risks. If a rattery tests positive for any disease including RBF, it’s possible to remove it from the colony. Unfortunately testing is very expensive ($89 per rat) and burning out diseases means shutting down for a while, so many don’t bother. I know I couldn’t live with the fact of knowing anyone was hospitalized because of my rats.

You should wash your hands after interacting with any animal, and clean any scratches or wounds immediately with hot water and soap. Look out for any signs of infection at the sight of wound and for flu like symptoms within 1-21 days after being scratched or bitten.
Do not allow children under 5 or immunocompromised people such as pregnant/nursing moms near pets like rats, especially that are untested.

I’ve gone back and forth since December about whether to share this publicly, but I’ve finally decided it’s important.

This past winter, my daughter was hospitalized with Rat Bite Fever (Streptobacillus Spp.). She spent five days in the hospital receiving IV antibiotics. It was terrifying, it shook me to my core both as a parent and a breeder.

She was bitten by a rat. A little bite, maybe as deep as a paper cut. A tiny drop of blood. We cleaned it immediately. This rat was not one of mine, nor a part of my rattery. The rat was returned to her breeder immediately.

Since then, I’ve worked hard to ensure that my rattery is completely RBF-free, and I’m proud to say that it is. I’ve learned a lot. The risks, the bacteria, and most importantly, how preventable this can be with the right practices in place.

I’m sharing this now because I want it to be both a PSA and a reminder:

* If you’re looking for a rat, please research your breeder. Look for someone who health tests. Look for someone who doesn’t breed rats with a history of biting.

* And if you’re a breeder—please know that it is possible to eliminate RBF from your rattery. It takes effort, yes, but it’s worth it. For the people who adopt from you, and for the animals you’re responsible for.

If anyone has questions about our process, or my experience navigating all of this, I’m more than happy to talk. I just hope by sharing, someone else might avoid going through what we did.

** You're welcome to join in the conversation, but there will be no debate from me in this forum. I shared nothing but factual information, and will not help spread false narratives to spare breeders who failed to take necessary steps to clean up their programs.**

As my average wait for adopers on both waitlists push 3 months, I want to remind adopters that if you get rats somewhere else, please let me know. If you get approved, you stay on my waitlist.

That means: When I get to your name on waitlist, I will text, email, and text again as I sit at my phone waiting for 24 hours for a response from you. You paid a waitlist fee so I try to give everyone a fair chance at adoption. If 24+ hours go by and I hear nothing, or you tell me days later ā€œsorry I got rats somewhere elseā€, this will disqualify you from adopting from me in the future. Applications are good for a year so you can get rats elsewhere, let me know, and stay on waitlist for more rats 10 months from now. Or I can take you off the list if you don’t want to be spammed and stay on good terms with me if you choose to adopt from me 12+ months from applying.

I try to respond to applications within 3 business days and am on call 24/7 for adopter emergencies. I will respond within 24 hours with any questions from approved adopters on the waitlist. But when it’s time for me to get a response from you, I expect similar respect.

Now this isn’t to say ā€œdon’t get rats elsewhereā€, I fully support other local breeders like Joyceful Rats, Coastline Pets, and Reeds Rats, also local rescues like Mainely Rat Rescue and animal shelters. I want you to get rats when you’re ready, from wherever you want- you have that right!

I know my waitlist is long. I wish this was my only job but I am a ā€œquality over quantityā€ breeder who puts a ton of time, money, and love into every baby born here. I can’t offer supreme services (and have a life) with 100+ babies at a time. But *please* let me know if you’re no longer interested in rats.

I’ll post my updated waitlist in the next couple days so you can see how long it is until I get to you! PM w/ any questions as usualā¤ļøšŸ˜Š

We use kiln dried pine from Tractor Supply Co here. Paper and fleece are NOT allowed if you want to adopt from us, if there’s any issues with bedding you must let me know and I’ll help you find out how to help! Adoption contract does not allow you to switch bedding after adoption without discussing with me first. Only allowed beddings are:

Kiln dried Aspen
Kiln dried Pine
H**p
~some exceptions for properly maintained bioactive

Why Do I Use Kiln Dried Aspen Bedding?

Kiln dried aspen bedding is made from hardwood, and lacks the phenols present in softwood that causes harmful URI (Upper Respiratory Infection) in pet rats. URI can become fatal when not observed and treated very quickly.

Aspen is a safe and absorbent bedding, and much better than paper, which is non absorbent and contributes to the growth of harmful bacteria and fumes that cause URI and other health issues.
Aspen minimizes the buildup of ammonia, which helps manage odour. It also helps keep the cage more dry, and provides a comfortable bedding for pet rats.

Aspen is also pretty cost effective, and widely available. Some stores even sell lab grade aspen, which has much of the dust already removed. For other non lab grade brands, it is advised to shake out dust using a mesh bag prior to use. I personally buy Lab Grade Kiln Dried Aspen Shavings in 8 cubic foot bags from Ren's Pets Store (Canada).

As rats are fossorial mammals, meaning they need to dig and burrow as part of their behavioural necessities; bedding in the cage is an important necessity and offers enrichment as well as odor control and waste management.

Sometimes bedding can become infested with pests, especially in warehouses or stores where animals are allowed in. In order to manage this and eliminate parasites from bedding prior to use, store it in a freezer when possible, or use a preventative pest control like selamectin (aka Puppy and Kitten Revolution).

DO NOT USE CEDAR BEDDING FOR PET RATS. Even if kiln dried, cedar still contains phenols, and is harmful to their sensitive airways.

In my opinion and based on research, the best options for bedding are H**p, Kiln Dried Aspen, or Kiln Dried Pine.

I do not recommend paper as a bedding.

Support a USA rat rescue!

Friends, I am uncomfortable begging for help, but I simply must. Here is a screenshot showing that the balance in the Tiny Toes bank account is just $10.17 (see attached image) this evening. Unless we pay for vet care, foods, and supplies out of my personal Social Security checks we just can't provide for our animals and may have to close. Can you please please please help our animals? Donations may be made via PayPal and Zelle to [email protected]. Checks payable to Tiny Toes Rat Rescue may be mailed to P.O. Box 67571, Albuquerque. New Mexico 87193. Maybe you would like to do a fundraiser for us too please? All donations are tax deductible. We would be so grateful to you for your help. Thank you so much everyone.

In the last 6 months since I started offering humane euthanasia services, I have had the blessing of helping 2 rats not from my rattery cross the rainbow bridge to end their suffering of various physical ailments.

If your rat (or any animal) is suffering, the kindest and most selfless thing you can do is help your beloved pet to not be in pain anymore.

I am incredibly proud of the owners who reached out to me. I have seen some owners on social media who are hestitant to take their rats to the vet due to costs, distance, or selfish human behavior of wanting to be with them for as long as possible. It Is better to be a day early than a week too late. When you plan their last day you can make it special- a picnic in the sunshine, their first chocolate cupcake, cuddles for hours on the couch. I wish I had that with Moomoo. Emergency vet at midnight after a 2 hour drive is not fun for you- and especially not for your pet.

I am happy to provide this service to any animal, even if you didn’t get them from me. No animal should have to live out their days in pain if we truly love and care for them.

For reference, average euthenasia for a rat in New England is $100-400.

My services are $20 for out of rattery, free for rats I’ve produced. My travel fees are the same as rat deliveries, $1 per mile from Bedford, MA or free at East Providence, RI.

Please contact me for the agreement form or details. ā¤ļø
