โ ๏ธ Rabies Alert โ Suffolk County Pet Owners โ ๏ธ
The Suffolk County Department of Health has reported an ongoing terrestrial rabies outbreak in Suffolk County.
As of February 2026:
โข 20 raccoons and 2 cats have tested positive
โข Cases have been concentrated in the Town of Babylon
โข Rabies is fatal if untreated, but preventable with prompt medical care
๐พ What this means for you and your pets:

Make sure your pets are up to date on their rabies vaccines
โ
Avoid contact with wildlife (especially raccoons, stray cats, bats, coyotes, or any animals acting strangely)
โ
Do NOT approach sick, injured, or aggressive animals
โ
Supervise pets when outdoors
โ
Report animal bites or exposures immediately

Contact the Suffolk County Department of Health right away. Early treatment can save lives.
Rabies is rare but very serious. Staying informed and keeping vaccinations current is the best protection for your family and your pets.
