EHV-1 Outbreak News - Let’s talk about it.
November 2025, an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) was linked to the World Championship Barrel Racing Finals held in the Waco, Texas area November 5th through the 9th. Then two positive cases of Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy caused the cancellation of the remainder of the Barrel Futurities of America (BFA) World Championship. The event was scheduled to run November 17th through 22nd at Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, OK.
EHV-1/EHM is a reportable disease, meaning veterinarians must notify the state veterinarian’s office when a case is confirmed, and positive horses must remain in strict isolation following state guidelines. Contact tracing is currently ongoing. Sources such as USDA-APHIS, the Equine Disease Communication Center, and state animal health officials is the best way to confirm accurate information.
So far States with confirmed cases of EHV-1 (Equine Herpesvirus-1) include Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Colorado.
There have been numerous equine herpesvirus (EHV) outbreaks prior to 2025, with recent notable examples including a 2024 outbreak in Oregon and a 2022 outbreak in the UK.
Monitoring horses - Initial symptoms of EHV-1 include nasal discharge and a fever above 101.5 degrees. Symptoms that EHV-1 has progressed into EHM include weakness and stumbling in the hind limbs, difficulty urinating or defecating, "dead tail," and dribbling urine.
EHV-1 can spread rapidly via nose-to-nose contact, coughing, shared equipment, and even on humans’ clothes and boots. Regularly clean and disinfect all water/feed buckets, mucking equipment, tack, and any other equipment. Do not share or borrow tack or equipment at shows, events, or boarding facilities. Quarantine is always important and is a service we offer.
Prayers to all affected.
