With Fire Island Animal Welfare Society President John McCollum passing away over three months ago now, this announcement is both overdue as well as the most difficult post we ever had to share on this page. After much deliberation, the FIAWS Board has made the decision to begin the process of dissolving Fire Island Animal Welfare Society. This decision was not made casually, but the time has come where this guardianship is not to be the sole burden of a selected few, but a responsibility that we all share together. We thank everyone who has opened their hearts to us over the years. Be compassionate towards the animals that call Fire Island home, as well as kind to one another.
The care of creatures in our charge will continue, but in a different context. Frank Fischer is still feeding the feral felines, while Shoshanna is caring for the small orphanage of cats under her roof that have survived her husband. Here is how you can still help going forward:
• A credit can be made in under the accounts of Frank Fischer or Shoshanna McCollum with All Animals Pet Food & Supplies in East Islip to help them with ongoing expenses.
• Unwanted canned or dry food can be donated – contact us and we will arrange a pick-up.
• The GoFundMe page in memory of John McCollum is still active and will help towards remaining expenses: https://www.gofundme.com/f/john-mccollum?utm_campaign=p_cf+share-flow-1&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=customer
The website will remain active through the end of this summer, and this page will remain as a tribute to John until further notice.
