Most people put out bird feeders hoping for a peaceful view from the window. But when eight-year-old Gabi Mann started feeding crows in her Seattle backyard, something unexpected happened. What began as a simple act of kindness slowly turned into one of the most fascinating friendships between humans and wildlife anyone could imagine.
Every morning, Gabi filled feeders with dog food and fresh water, becoming a reliable part of the crows’ daily routine. Over time, the birds appeared to respond in a way few people expected. Known for their intelligence and social behavior, the crows reportedly began leaving behind tiny “gifts” on the feeder trays — buttons, polished glass, paper clips, screws, beads, Lego pieces, and even a tiny silver heart collected from around the neighborhood.
Then came the moment that made many people stop and look twice at what crows might actually understand. After Gabi’s mother accidentally dropped a camera lens cap nearby, it reportedly disappeared without anyone noticing. The next morning, it showed up beside the birdbath. Birdcam footage later appeared to show a crow carrying it into the yard and even rinsing it in water before leaving it behind. Stories like this leave people wondering just how much animals notice when we think no one is watching.
