This has been one of the hardest winters in many, many years! I remember 10 yrs ago when we rescued Webster, we had a winter like this and my dad would plow paths for the minis and Webster. We haven’t had to plow paths for the mini or Webster since. This winter we’ve had to plow paths the minis again.
Is it spring yet?!?
I’m feeling ranty this morning.
While shoveling s**t that literally has nowhere to go down at the horses, I found myself dwelling (again) about some recent posts on the town page. I usually avoid that place because I like to think I have better things to do than that—but here we are.
Let’s start with the whining about s**t on farm fresh eggs. I’ll be honest, I’ve been stewing on that one for a week. I’m not even a “real” farmer by most standards, but I bust my ass every single day keeping animals alive, healthy, and cared for. Farms have s**t. Farms have mud. And guess what? Sometimes that gets on those pretty little eggs.
I’m up at 4am, tunneling through snow, ice, mud, and manure—feeding animals and collecting eggs—before heading to my full-time job as a public high school teacher. There’s a whole other rant there, but I’ll save that for another day.
I throw eggs into cartons so you can have farm fresh eggs—and by the way, it costs me far more to produce them than what you pay. Not to mention the work that goes into it all- And does it really need to be said that you should wash your eggs before you cook with them? And what pocesses someone to post about it?? And oh. My. GOD the comments! This rage is what got me through a full days worth of s**t in my stalls- so thanks for the motivation.
Which brings me to my next frustration: the comments about the EDC being “MIA.”
We are very much not missing. Work is happening—constantly—behind the scenes. While meetings are a lovely use of time🙄, the real work happens outside those meetings.
Farmers markets. Halloween in the Village. Christmas in the Village. America’s 250th. Bike trails. Grants, studies…And more.
It’s honestly impressive how closely some folks are tracking this—nice to know people are that bored. And since we’re on the topic: the application to join the EDC is on the town website. Participation is always welcome.
The reason this town doesn’t attract big business isn’t because people aren’t trying—it’s because we lack infrastructure. No town-wide sewer. No town-wide water. That’s the starting point. And honestly, I don’t think Dunkin or Dollar General truly belong here anyway nor would I ever support it- move to Middletown if you want that garbage.
We blew opportunities with Sunrise Resort, Johnsonville, and the airport. The golf course is likely our last real shot. Worried about chemicals? Take a look at the food you consume every single day. I promise you—s**t on your eggs is the least of your problems.
And finally—while I’m wading through two feet of snow because Brendan is out plowing all day and all night and hasn’t gotten to snow blow yet- let’s talk about the complaints over the cost of plowing a driveway.
These guys are not out there for fun. He’s plowing to make money to pay bills while business is slow because of this winter from hell. That means long days, longer nights, zero sleep, and a truck taking an absolute beating so you can get to work, make your doctor’s appointment, or open your business on time.
Most people are incredibly grateful—and we appreciate that and happy to help! But when folks start bitching about the price on fb from their comfy warm couch? That sends me right over the edge.
If you think it’s so expensive, go buy yourself a truck and a plow. Cover the fuel. Cover the maintenance. Cover the insurance. Cover the wear and tear. And when that truck goes down? “F**ked” doesn’t even begin to describe it.
But hey—we like to live on the edge over here.
So now I’ll go shovel a path to my farm stand, put out a fresh batch of elderberry syrup, and some eggs—yes, possibly with a little mud and s**t on them.
Can you tell I’m over this winter?! 🤣😅😘
